The Uvalde CISD administration official sent the following email obtained by the Uvalde Hesperian which was sent to the district’s teachers earlier this month on February 9th:
“Good morning UCISD administration,
Due to safety concerns, we would like to start the process of removing all electrical appliances from all classrooms and offices including microwaves, mini refrigerators, space heaters, coffee machines, electric hot plates, popcorn makers and any small electrical appliances before our Spring Break holiday this year. Our goal is to have zero small appliances in the classroom/office before summer vacation.
Small appliances in the classroom/office create:
- safety hazard/risk
- exposure to serious injury for students
- potential fire hazard
- scalding and burn injuries for students and staff

A Uvalde CISD teacher submitted the following statement to the Uvalde Hesperian about the removal of appliances:
“Everyone I. The district received the email about microwaves, mini- fridge etc. it states they would not be allowed in offices nor classrooms.
Now, in the Sunday paper it says no teachers will be able to have them in their classrooms. So, this means the administration can have them?”
Their offices, counselors can have them because they have an office, central office personnel can have them, but not teachers. The ones who have limited lunch time, who can’t just run to a centralized area whenever to grab a bottled water etc. Make this make sense.
Teachers are not reimbursed for buying totes or anything else. Most teachers will also have to do this on their own time as well.”
