Press release from Uvalde CISD
April 2, 2024 – Uvalde High School Mariachi
Established in 1999 by the Uvalde Consolidated School District, Mariachi Los Coyotes of Uvalde High
School has become a beacon of musical excellence and cultural celebration in the community. With a
mission to educate, learn, and share the rich history of Mexican music, the ensemble has brought a
new musical experience to audiences while proudly representing the vibrant Mexican culture.
Throughout its 25-year history, Mariachi Los Coyotes has witnessed over 1,000 talented musicians
graduate from its program, showcasing their skills in performances across the Tree City, the Hill
Country, and the San Antonio area.
In a momentous achievement, Mariachi Los Coyotes clinched their first State Championship at the
UIL State Mariachi Festival in 2023, a triumph that garnered recognition in the esteemed Rolling
Stones Magazine. As the group marks its 25th year, they have been honored with an invitation to
perform alongside the Boulder Chorale, a renowned inter-generational choir boasting over 150 singers
ranging from 6 to 88 years old. Through their music, Mariachi Los Coyotes continues to expand its
reach, spreading joy and fostering a positive atmosphere in Uvalde, Texas, through their captivating
performances and unwavering dedication to their craft.
Mario Rodriguez, one of the original members of the 1999 UCISD mariachi, says, “It’s truly amazing to
think back on being one of the founding members of Mariachi Los Coyotes and seeing how far the
group has come in the last 25 years. Back then, we were just a small group called The UHS Mariachi,
if I’m not mistaken, and our music probably sounded a bit rough around the edges compared to
today’s polished performances. Mr. Menchaca had his work cut out for him! But even back then, as
high school kids driven by our love for music and creativity, we could hear the promise of something
special in the making. That same sense of hope and passion resonates with me whenever I listen to
the group today. Here’s to celebrating the past accomplishments and to the anticipation of what the
next 25 years will bring for Mariachi Los Coyotes!”
On April 11, 2024, Mariachi Los Coyotes will convene at the John H. Harrel Auditorium for the annual
“Serenata a Mi Querido Uvalde,” concert at 6 p.m. “We’re hard at work at making this year’s 25th
Anniversary a special celebration,” said Albert Martinez, Director of Mariachi Los Coyotes. We would
really love to see and meet as many alumni as possible and celebrate the community of Uvalde
together.
