Previously, the Uvalde Hesperian published an article about the working poor in Uvalde and the South Texas area and the challenges they face.

As a follow-up to the article, the Hesperian has decided to look at what summer might be like for the upper middle to upper socio-economic population using local observations and experiences.

None of these example situations are about specific individuals but fictional examples based on real life observations.

Couples in their 30’s-40’s who might fit this category usually consist of one or both employed in a professional or white collar profession such as a lawyer, CPA or someone who works in a medical specialty or investment or financial planner.  Oftentimes one of the spouses is a doctor, lawyer, bank manager, school administrator or works in a professional role while the other spouse has a specialty interest or business and coordinates their children’s schedules.

Other professions specific to Southwest Texas might include a ranch manager, ranch chef, hunting guide or wildlife manager or marketing or public relations professional.

These families live in nicer kids-n-cul-de-sac residential areas or own a house with an acre or more of land with the neighboring houses at least a half acre or more away.

Living spaces are kept clean and uncluttered often with open floor plan living spaces.

House cleaning and lawn care are usually taken care of by service professionals that work on a weekly or bi-weekly appointment basis. However, children often are tasked with a list of chores which include emptying the trash or home.toys or games back in place.

Kids might be involved in sports teams, provided special one on one coaching and may play select sports. Gymnastics or ballet lessons may be on a child’s schedule.

Any children will be off for summer break from a private school or preferred public school.

Many couples have an inground pool and a cabana and firepit for summer parties and entertaining guests in the backyard.

Upper middle social-economic persons from gated communities often governed by an HOA will head up to Concan to rent luxury vacation rentals running from $1000 to $1200 per /night. It is not uncommon for families to reserve the same rental for the same weekend each year as a family tradition. Extended family and some guests may also stay at the vacation rental.

Some will travel up to Concan towing a golf cart to drive around the Concan area.

Up for a round of golf? Tee times are made in advance and young professional couples will wear smart casual clothing with the woman sporting custom ladies skirts and golf attire.

Some parties or get togethers will likely be catered affairs and live entertainment such as a band or special musical; entertainment might be booked.

Persons considered upper socio-economic keep very busy work schedules but often take mini-vacations several times a year.

For many in this socio-economic group, life is about seeking new adventures rather than buying a lot of stuff. The stuff that is bought is often well made and last, holding its style and value.
