On Wednesday, former Uvalde CISD Teacher Amy Franco posted on her Facebook page a fight broke out between two students at a PE Class with supervised by one teacher,
According to Franco, the teacher attempted to break up the altercation and was injured. The teacher’s radio may have been knocked out of the teacher’s hand..
The Uvalde Hesperian reached out to Uvalde CISD Executive Director of Communications and Marketing Anne Marie Espinoza asking for a statement.
Espinoza sent the following statement to the Hesperian:
“As you may have seen on social media, an altercation took place at Morales Junior High involving two students and a coach who stepped in to intervene. We want to assure you that our students’ and staff’s safety and well-being remain our highest priorities. It is imperative to understand that engaging in physical altercations can lead to serious consequences, including potential placement in our District Alternative Education Program (DAEP). For more details, please refer to the Uvalde CISD Student Code of Conduct on our district’s website: Student Code of Conduct.
While we cannot delve into specific disciplinary actions, we can confirm that additional consequences, possibly extending to criminal charges, may apply if staff members are injured during such incidents. We are committed to working closely with parents and caregivers to address the serious implications and risks associated with physical altercations and ensure the safety of all involved. The injured staff member has received medical treatment covered by Workmen’s Compensation, and we are providing continuous support to him.
This incident highlighted a communication error. A radio channel was inadvertently switched to the high school, causing a misdirected response. Furthermore, the Centegix badge worn by the staff member failed to send the necessary signal for help due to a campus reassignment issue. We are actively implementing corrective measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
Unfortunately, this is not the first altercation on our campuses this year. The following incidents have been documented:
- Uvalde High School: 0
- Morales Junior High: 4
- Legacy Elementary@Flores: 0
- Dalton Elementary: 0
- Uvalde CISD Dual Language Academy: 0
- Batesville School: 0
We urge staff, parents, and caregivers to partner with us in guiding students toward understanding and utilizing alternative, non-violent conflict resolution methods. Our schools are environments for learning and development. We strive to empower our students to adapt and contribute positively, fostering a future defined by innovation, resilience, and purpose. Together, they can become architects of a more just, dynamic, and inspired world.
