A former Uvalde CISD employee reached out to the Uvalde Hesperian stating the District has recently created a new administrative position to assist with Human Resources and has hired someone to fill the position.

According to the source, the new administrator was brought on to possibly assist with TRS (teachers’ retirement and contracts).

The Uvalde Hesperian reached out to Uvalde CISD officials Thursday morning, January 16th, 2025 via email asking if a new administrator was hired and is waiting for an official response.

Uvalde CISD is currently facing a budget deficit of 2.5 million dollars for the 2024-2025 school year. Uvalde CISD Superintendent Ashley Chohlis stated at the December 16th, 2024 School Board meeting the district is consolidating positions to reduce spending.

Under Texas Law, Uvalde CISD trustees are allowed to discuss personal matters during closed door executive sessions.

Uvalde CISD School Closure Announcement for Tuesday, January 21, 2025

Due to the National Weather Service’s forecast of winter precipitation and potentially hazardous conditions from Monday night through Tuesday morning, Uvalde CISD will cancel all school operations on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. Our top priority is the safety of our students, staff, and school community, and we aim to prevent any risks associated with travel and outdoor exposure during this period.

  Commitment to Education

Uvalde CISD remains steadfast in its commitment to quality education and student support. Although we prioritize the safety of our school community, we are dedicated to ensuring that educational opportunities continue when conditions are safe.

 Wednesday School Schedule

Our team will begin assessing road conditions on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, as early as 5:00 a.m. We will thoroughly evaluate roads across the community to ensure safe travel. If some routes, such as overpasses, are inaccessible, we will explore alternative safe bus routes.

  • Decision Timeline:
    • If severe weather persists, the decision to close or delay school will be made by 4:00 p.m. the day prior. If conditions improve, the decision will be made as early as possible in the morning, with notifications sent by 6:00 a.m. on the school day.
  • Communication:
    • Once a decision is reached, we will communicate through email, our District website at www.ucisd.net, social media, and local media outlets to ensure comprehensive coverage.

Families are encouraged to take necessary precautions during severe weather to ensure safety. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we navigate this winter weather together. We appreciate your continued support of our students and school community.

A suspicious 911 phone call prompted Uvalde CISD to place Uvalde High and Morales Junior High Schools on Hold status as law enforcement responded to a potential threat. LaPryor ISD placed their campuses on in Secure status as a result of the call.

A student of either Uvalde High School or Morales Junior High posted a picture on social media Thursday afternoon of an officer with a shotgun in a school’s hallway with the caption, “Hell Yeah”

Uvalde County Constable Emmanuel Zamora posted on his Facebook page that a large police presence was observed at 1:45PM.

Ther following timeline was also posted by Zamora:

1:45 PM: Uvalde CISD schools are being extra patrolled due to a suspicious call.
Uvalde CISD Police are CONFIRMING everything is ok. Updates will be provided ASAP.
UPDATE: 2:02 PM by UCISD.
Morales Junior High and Uvalde High School are on a Hold Status due to an incident that was called into the Uvalde PD regarding the Uvalde High School. Uvalde CISD PD, DPS Troopers, and Uvalde PD are on the campus to sweep the campus. Parents are asked not to visit the campuses at this time. More information will be released shortly.
2:18 pm
Update to our Morales Junior High and Uvalde High School Caregivers….
The Hold Status has been lifted at both campuses. Your cooperation and patience were very much appreciated. Please know that there will be an increased police presence at both campuses. We are asking parents and caregivers to allow the school day to return to the normal schedule and allow a regular dismissal of the school day. This incident directly resulted from a swatting hoax called into the Uvalde PD. The district is working with all law enforcement agencies to gather more information to be released as it becomes available. Your support and cooperation are greatly appreciated.
Parent J. Anson Bills stated that he observed other parents’ cars on 2nd Street and Studer street causing increased traffic which in the event of a real emergency could delay 1st responders in reaching the schools.
Uvalde CISD released the following statement as a press release:
“Today, an unfortunate situation unfolded when the Uvalde Police Department received a 911 call shortly before 2 p.m., reporting an active shooter on the third floor of Uvalde High School. We want to emphasize that Uvalde High School does not have a third floor. Nevertheless, the Uvalde Police Department, DPS Troopers, Border Patrol, and Uvalde CISD Police Department responded promptly and conducted a comprehensive sweep of the campus. As a precaution, Uvalde High School and Morales Junior High were placed on Hold Status to ensure student safety by bringing them indoors and clearing the hallways. A lockdown was not initiated, as no active threat was identified on or around the campus.

We are relieved to confirm that no active shooter was found following a thorough search, and the claims were determined to be false. This incident has been classified as a swatting hoax, especially since a similar call was made to a school in San Antonio. To maintain safety and provide peace of mind, there was a heightened police presence at both campuses until the conclusion of the school day.

We acknowledge the anxiety and fear that such situations can cause among our students, staff, and community members. It is important to remind everyone that counseling support is available for students who may need it, and they are encouraged to reach out to their campus counselors. Additionally, community resources can be accessed on the Uvalde CISD webpage under the Counseling Resources section, providing access to Counseling/Behavioral Health Service Providers.

We extend our gratitude to the Uvalde Police Department, DPS Troopers, Border Patrol, and the Uvalde CISD Police Department for their swift and coordinated response, showcasing professionalism during these critical moments. Rest assured, our top priorities remain the safety and well-being of our students and staff. We are committed to maintaining a secure and nurturing educational environment for everyone.”

“My son is deathly afraid of school now.”

The Uvalde CISD School Board held a special school board meeting Friday evening, June 3rd, 2022 at 6:30 PM at the Benson Board Room.

Since the deadly Robb Elementary School shooting, this is the first time the Uvalde CISD school board has met publicly.

Two speakers signed up to speak before the school board: Carper Capt and Dawn Poitevent, a parent of a first grader at Dalton Elementary School who recently was taken on a field trip to Robb Elementary School.

Capt spoke words of support and encouragement for the Uvalde community and the  school board. “This is a special place. It always has been, it is,  and always will be. Together as a community by the Grace of God, we will overcome this,” Capt said.

Capt was followed by Dawn Poitevent, a parent of a 1st grader about to enter 2nd grade,

“Thank you for letting me speak. I just came to humbly request that as you plan for our  future of our children, you consider the little ones that were in first grade at Dalton because my son is deathly afraid of school now. His last memory of Robb was that he had gone on his second grade field trip to introduce them to Robb and the teachers and the school. What he knows right now, is that when he goes to another school, he is going to get shot by a bad man. I just beg you to please consider if there is any possible way, for the incoming second graders that were in first at Dalton, as you look at placement across the community, know that is a way to keep them with their Dalton family, that is the only place my son feels safe right now. “

“We picked up his items at the classroom and he expressed that was the only place he wanted to go back to school. And moving him to a new campus next year is going to be very traumatic. So I just humbly ask that as you think about the plans for our children, you remember the first graders going to second. They have little memories too and they’ve  been traumatized. ” Thank you for your time.” said Poitevent.

School Superintendent Hall Harrell spoke shortly after saying, ” Heartbreak does not describe what we have felt. I have not found a word that described how deep our community has been cut.”

“The teachers, our students, our staff… I want to make sure…I was asked this again this morning. I take it I need  to continue to repeat and repeat it until it’s in everybody’s mind: We are not going back to Robb School. That will not be a school for our children moving forward.  We’ve got plans for things other than a school site for that, and that will be forthcoming what we do with that location.” Harrell said.

Our students will be at a school site but we haven’t determined for the alignment.  Harrell went on to address Poitevent’s comments, “You’re son spoke, and we’re going to listen to that voice.”

After Harrell’s comments, the school board entered into an  executive session for approximately an hour, which allowed the board to discuss certain legal  and personnel matters in private away from the media and the public.

The board reconvened and voted to approve delegating authority during the ongoing situation to  Superintendent Harrell.

The board could have acted to terminate the employment of any school personnel including Uvalde CISD Police Chief Pete Arredondo but it took no such action.

Before the board adjourned, names of those students and teachers who were murdered a little over two weeks ago at Robb Elementary School.
