Nearly 1 in 5 U.S. children is affected by obesity according the CDC. At CPLC Uvalde Head Start Center, we believe healthy habits start early: at home, in our classrooms, and in our community. Childhood obesity affects physical health, self-esteem, and lifelong wellness, so prevention and awareness are key.
This September, we’re celebrating National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month with hands-on activities to teach healthy habits:
- Color Your Plate – Kids create rainbows with fruits and vegetables, enjoy tasting parties, and chart their favorites.
- Animal Action Games – Kids will name an animal and will act it out through movement.
- Using Choosy – Kids get to move and learn engaging resources for fun activities.
Together with parents and community partners, we’re helping children build healthy habits one colorful plate, one joyful movement at a time.
The Head Start Center has served Uvalde families for 30 years and has been operated by Chicanos Por La Causa since 2021. Today, it provides high-quality early childhood education to about 50 children ages 6 weeks to 5 years, along with support services for their families. By partnering with parents and the broader community, the center helps children prepare for school and life while promoting healthy development and lifelong learning.
