After two weeks of early voting yielding only 17 votes. local voters turned out in large numbers on Election Day, pushing the $3.75 million school bond to a 54-54 tie that resulted in its defeat.

Saturday night final unofficial election results were not released until late into the evening by the Uvalde County Elections office.

“A tie vote in an election on a measure (i.e., a proposition election with for and against votes) means the measure failed, because there were no more votes for the measure than against it. There is no automatic recount procedure, because Chapter 216 of the Code, which regulates automatic recounts, only applies to candidate elections.”

During early voting for the Knippa ISD Bond election, only 17 voters have cast votes.

General election day for both elections is on Saturday, May 2nd, 2026

Two school districts are holding elections that will determine different outcomes. Uvalde CISD is holding its school board elections to determine which candidates will be elected to various trustee positions.

Knippa ISD is holding a $3,750,000 bord election which if approved by the voters, will result in a significant property tax increase for many Knippa property owners.

Election Day will be on Saturday, May 2nd with polls hours from 7AM.

During early voting for the Knippa ISD Bond election, only 17 voters have cast votes, according to data received by the Uvalde County Elections Office.

Knippa ISD student enrollment:

According to information requested by the Uvalde Hesperian, Knippa ISD Superintendent Benny Hernandez provided the following data regarding the district’s total enrollment and how many students within the district and how many students attending are from outside of the district.

Total Knippa ISD student enrollment is 413 students.

63.4 % of the Knippa ISD student enrollment or 262 students are non-district with 36.6% or 151 students reside within the district.

According to this data, local property owners in Knippa ISD who may or may not have a child enrolled at Knippa ISD, will be the ones paying property taxes for this $3.75 million bond

63.4% of the students who actually attend the school live outside the district and their families owning property outside the district will likely pay zero property taxes to Knippa ISD.

Early voting was held from April 20th -24th April 21st. April 27th and 28th were the final two days of early voting.

Attendance Accounting Handbook from the Texas Education Agency states the following:
In Section 3.2.1.4, it says a nonresident student who is legally transferred into the district gets ADA eligibility Code 3 (full-day) or Code 6 (half-day). That code means the receiving district can claim the student for funding — including the state share of Foundation School Program (FSP) money.

According to the TEA Handbook it says, “A student is eligible to generate ADA, and thus FSP funding, if the student is in membership and also meets the ADA eligibility requirements.”

Monday April 27th was a moving day for the Briscoe Animal Resource Center staff and animals previously housed at the old BARC animal shelter near HEB.

The Uvalde Hesperian visited that facility and was given a tour by Heather Ruble BARC Vice President. According to Ruble she is also a county employee as an in-kind donation.

The new facility has designated kennels for the City of Uvalde animal control and 18 spaces specifically for animals brought in by county law enforcement.

The facility has designated areas for intake, medical care, and an adoption area where those wanting to adopt an animal can meet and interact with a dog or a cat. The new BARC facility also has an outdoor run area for dogs housed at the shelter.

Earlier that morning at Uvalde County Commissioners Court, 38th District Judge Kelley Kimble and BARC President spoke on an agenda making suggestions for a memorandum of Understanding which will be considered and acted upon by Uvalde County Commissioners Court at a future meeting.

Kimble referenced a 20-year agreement between the county and BARC.

“These are baby steps we are taking. and a big step forward to where we were before,” Uvalde County Commissioner Mariano Pargas said.

UVALDE — Community, conservation and local heritage came together Friday evening as residents gathered in the heart of downtown for UvaldeRadio.net’s Trees & Bees Party On The Plaza, a celebration honoring Arbor Day and Uvalde’s enduring identity as the Honey Capital of the World.
Held from 6 to 9 p.m. beneath the mature oak and pecan trees of the downtown plaza, the event transformed the historic square into a lively community gathering space framed by the Uvalde Grand Opera House and the County Courthouse. The evening also marked the latest installment of UvaldeRadio.net’s monthly Party On The Plaza vendor market, held every final Friday of the month, with this edition centered on the intertwined importance of trees, bees and natural resources in the region.
The event coincided with Arbor Day and served as a reminder of Uvalde’s heritage as a designated Tree City USA community. Organizers emphasized the ecological, historical and economic roles trees and pollinators play in Southwest Texas, where agriculture, native brushland and conservation remain deeply connected.
Local and regional vendors filled the plaza offering artisan goods, food, drinks, crafts, and potted plants and trees, while the Texas Master Naturalists Brush Y Canyons chapter shared information about its mission to develop well-informed volunteers dedicated to education, outreach and stewardship of natural resources and natural areas across Texas communities.
On the honey side of the celebration, local honey vendors were also featured, including The Blinged Buck, UvaldeRadio.net’s official Uvalde Honey partner, offering its 100 percent raw Uvalde Brush Honey. The event also welcomed Uvalde County Honey Queen Cashlyn Varnon, who posed for photos with residents, autographed 8×10 photos, and handed out golden paper crowns to children, making them honorary princes and princesses for the evening.
During a short interview conducted by UvaldeRadio.net Promotions Assistant Mercedez, Varnon spoke about her pride in representing Uvalde and the importance of drawing attention to the region’s bee population and honey industry. Known for producing high-quality honey from the nectar of guajillo brush, Uvalde’s honey industry remains a defining part of the area’s identity, agriculture and culture.
Varnon also announced the return of the Uvalde Honey Festival, set for April 8-11, 2027, when the annual event—canceled for 2026—is expected to return as an expanded four-day celebration.
UvaldeRadio.net Program Director Robert Miguel Rodriguez, who organized the event, emceed the evening, conducted giveaways and introduced special guests City of Uvalde Mayor Hector R. Luevano and Rachel Sarlls, regional urban ecologist with the Texas A&M Forest Service for the San Antonio region.
Mayor Luevano addressed attendees with an official Arbor Day proclamation, reflecting on the holiday’s origins in 1872, when the Nebraska Board of Agriculture first established a day devoted to planting trees. He also spoke about Uvalde’s past recognition as a Tree City USA community and the importance of renewing that civic spirit.
In one of the evening’s most memorable moments, the mayor quoted Isaiah 61:3, saying residents “may be called the oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified,” drawing a parallel between the strength, stability and long life symbolized by oak trees and the enduring spirit of the Uvalde community.
Mayor Luevano then presented the framed proclamation to Sarlls, who encouraged residents to recognize the vital role trees play in everyday life. She pointed to the shade the trees provided during the event, noted the pecans scattered in the grass and invited the crowd to take a deep breath and appreciate the oxygen created by the trees surrounding them.
Following the event, Sarlls praised the community’s efforts.
“It is amazing to have a community come together to celebrate not only trees for Arbor Day but honey as well, two things that go hand in hand,” Sarlls said. “Our pollinators and trees help support each other, the planet, and us and our communities. Bringing the community together to connect with nature is always a worthwhile cause. Trees help clean our air and water, provide shade, and also just simply make people happy. Thank you for celebrating trees and proclaiming April 24th as Uvalde Arbor Day. It was an honor to be a part of the celebration. Keep moving forward in celebration everything you have grown and everything future generations will plant.”
The proclamation was met with cheers before music resumed and the plaza returned to the sounds of conversation, laughter and shopping. Families lingered into the cooler spring evening, children gathered fallen pecans beneath the trees, and residents enjoyed the sense of shared community as the sun set over downtown.
Organizers said the event reflected how conservation and community can go hand in hand, linking Uvalde’s agricultural roots, environmental stewardship and civic pride.
UvaldeRadio.net will continue its monthly Party On The Plaza series with a School’s Out Party On The Plaza scheduled for May 29, coinciding with Uvalde High School graduation, followed by an America 250 Party On The Plaza celebrating the semiquincentennial birthday of the United States the weekend before July 4.

Just before Noon today, Uvalde police. Uvalde County Sheriff’s Officers and other first responders swarmed the Uvalde Walmart and evacuated Walmart employees and employees who work at businesses located in the retail strip center east of the big box store. Some employees gathered at Tex Best Convenience store across Highway 90.

According to a statement from the Uvalde Police Department, it said, ‘At approximately 11:11 am, the Walmart customer service desk received an anonymous phone call from a male subject who spoke with an accent and stated that an explosive device had been placed inside the store and would detonate within 30 minutes. Walmart personnel immediately notified the Uvalde Police Department.”

The press release continued stating that a systematic search of the building was made.

“During the reentry process for store employees, a separate male subject made a follow-up threat to employees, which was secondary to the original incident and not related to the initial bomb threat. Employees again notified law enforcement. Officers from the Uvalde Police Department and assisting agencies responded immediately, located the individual, and took him into custody. The subject was arrested and charged with Terroristic Threat,” the statement said.

According to sources, South Ham Lane was closed off for a portion of the time.

Press Release from Southwest Texas College                                                                                                    4/22/26

(Uvalde, Texas) Southwest Texas College showcased its continued growth, strong finances and student-focused mission during its 2026 Friends and Alumni Network President’s Gala, which raised $27,000 for scholarships and drew about 320 attendees to the Uvalde County Fairplex Event Center on Saturday, April 11.

The “Rhinestones and Rodeo” gala brought together college supporters for dinner, casino fun, live music and a silent auction, while also highlighting a year of expansion across academics, workforce training and student success. During his remarks, Dr. Gonzales said the college’s financial position remains strong, noting that the fund balance has grown from $23 million to $57 million since 2019 and that the college’s tax rate has decreased from 16 cents to 12 cents over that same period.

“Last year alone, our fund balance increased by almost $6 million,” Gonzales said, calling the state of the college excellent. He said Southwest Texas College has served the people of Southwest Texas for 80 years and continues to innovate while staying grounded in its mission to serve students.

Gonzales also thanked the college’s Board of Trustees for its support, as well as faculty, staff and members of the leadership team who help advance the institution’s goals. He said collaboration with community partners makes the college’s work possible and creates opportunities for students across the service area.

The evening also included a tribute to the late Uvalde County Judge William R. Mitchell, whose service to the community and support for Southwest Texas College were recognized. Gonzales said Mitchell was a steadfast supporter of the college and noted his work as a faculty member, his years of public service and his longtime role as the voice of Uvalde Coyotes Football on Friday nights.

Gonzales pointed to a series of accomplishments that reflect the college’s recent growth. He said the institution is moving through the accreditation process, with a positive visit last fall and expectations of full reaccreditation after the commission meets in June. He also noted that the EMT-paramedic program has earned full accreditation, while the surgical technology program is still in process. He also pointed to growth in aviation mechanics, professional truck driving, power line, diesel mechanics and behavioral health, along with plans for a physical therapy assistant program.

He said the aviation mechanics program in Del Rio recently received approval to expand from airframe training into powerplant instruction, a move he described as significant for students and the region. New buildings are also going up in Eagle Pass and Del Rio, with another planned for Crystal City to support expanded training in welding, air conditioning, construction, science and workforce development.

Gonzales also highlighted potential expansion into La Salle and Dimmit counties, saying he has been meeting with local leaders about bringing technical education closer to those communities. “Both counties are super receptive and excited about that potential,” he said, adding that if plans move forward, an annexation election could be held in November for the counties to potentially join the college district.

Gonzales also noted that the college board has approved a bachelor’s degree in business administration, which is now moving through the state approval process and could launch in spring 2027.

Rodeo remained a major point of pride during the gala. Gonzales said seven Southwest Texas College athletes competed in the National College Finals Rodeo in Casper, where the women’s team was named national team of the year and Acey Pinkston was crowned national champion barrel racer. Tyler Calhoun was also recognized as national champion calf roper and rookie of the year.

Gonzales said those accomplishments reflect the college’s broader impact across the region and its role in preparing students to lead in classrooms, job sites, hospitals and communities. He closed by thanking supporters for believing in Southwest Texas College and its students, saying the scholarships raised from the event will help learners across the college’s service area.

Gonzales closed with a Henry Ford quote: “Coming together was the beginning. Staying together was progress. Working together was success.”

SWTX Radiologic Technology Students Earn Inaugural Ralph Gonzalez Scholarships

Press Release from Southwest Texas College                                                                                                                4/21/26

Southwest Texas College radiologic technology students Jessica Sandoval of Uvalde and Cheyenne Walling of Del Rio have been named the first recipients of the Ralph Gonzalez Scholarship, a new award created by Radiology Associates of Uvalde to honor longtime imaging leader Ralph “Freddie” Gonzalez.

The scholarship provides 2,000‑dollar awards to current students in the SWTX Radiologic Technology Program who show strong academic performance and professional promise. Gonzalez, a retired radiology director at Uvalde Memorial Hospital who now serves as the hospital’s radiation safety officer, helped build regional pathways for radiologic technologists and has served on the program’s clinical advisory board since its launch in 2007.

During a recent meeting in the college’s radiologic technology lab, Gonzalez thanked college and hospital leaders for their support of the program and encouraged students to see themselves as professionals from the moment they enter the clinic. He urged them to act as ambassadors for the program, saying that every patient encounter is an opportunity to exceed expectations and inspire future imaging professionals.

Program faculty and hospital representatives also praised the scholarship applicants, noting that many graduates now work in advanced imaging areas across Uvalde Memorial Hospital’s expanded department, which grew from a small diagnostic X‑ray unit to a multimodality service under Gonzalez’s leadership.

Southwest Texas College’s radiologic technology program has graduated more than 120 radiographers and continues to partner with Uvalde Memorial Hospital to meet regional workforce needs in medical imaging.
