Hundreds of people showed up for the Uvalde High School Bonfire outside the Honey Bowl Wednesday evening, October 30th following the Homecoming Parade. The Uvalde High School band played just before the big UHS letters and the accumulated cardboard pile were lit.

As the fire grew, many students near the pile could be seen holding up cell phones taking pictures and video of the scene.

Just across the street from the Honey Bowl, long lines of people were seen just outside Crossroads Community Church for the free snow cones being given away.

The Uvalde Volunteer Fire Department was on hand with their big tower truck parked near the field where the bonfire was located.

Police cars could be seen down Getty Street with their red and blue lights on while bonfire attendees wearing Homecoming mums cross a nearby street to the field.

Final: Fredericksburg Billies 23; Uvalde Coyotes 13

Coyotes daring play during the fourth quarter added another touchdown for the home team

By Michael Robinson | Uvalde Hesperian

(The Uvalde Hesperian arrived at the game at halftime.)

At halftime, the score was Uvalde Coyotes 7; Fredericksburg Billies 7. Throughout much of the third quarter, possession of the ball seemed to go back and forth between the Coyotes and the Billies.

However, the Fredericksburg team broke free and ran the ball back for a touchdown. Near the end of the third quarter the Coyotes fumbled the ball near their end zone and the Billies were able to recover the ball for a Safety. During the third quarter the Billies scored a total of two touchdowns and a safety creating a large score deficit for the Coyotes to make up to have a chance at winning the game.

In the early part of the 4th quarter the Coyotes ran a gutsy play resulting in the Coyotes scoring a touchdown but failed to make the extra point.

The fourth quarter clock was against the Coyotes, and they were unable to put any more points on the board.

Coyote Quarterback Jett Flores was at the game but stayed on the sidelines.
With about 6 minutes left in the 4th Quarter, frustration seemed to set in for several of the players.

A gathering of several dozen people assembled at the Cartender’s parking lot Saturday evening shortly after 6 PM Saturday to welcome Uvalde Coyote’s Quarterback Jett Flores home after being released from a San Antonio hospital.  On September 20th, Flores was airlifted to a hospital in San Antonio after being helmet struck by a Crystal City Javelina player at Friday night’s away game in Crystal City.

The Uvalde Hesperian spoke with Jett Flores’ father Leo “Chato” Flores who said he wanted to thank the many, many people for the outpouring of love and prayers and believes those prayers made all the difference.

UvaldeRadio.net announcer Simon Ortiz who was at the game said, “Jett was running an option sweep to his right when he decided to run with the ball. He turned the corner and was about to head upfield when one of the defensive players hit him around the shoulders and neck leading with his helmet. The CC player had a running start, and he did lead with the crown of his helmet which is called targeting. Nowadays that type of tackle is illegal.

Chato and Melissa Flores posted the following on their Facebook Page Saturday afternoon: “Our #4 is headed home! ETA 1 hr. Uvalde “home” has a whole different meaning to it!! We are blessed to be part of such an amazing community! Uvalde Strong”

Two teams with strong defenses clash but the Uvalde Coyoto offensive line was too strong for the Javelinas to contain

The Uvalde Coyotes ended their second game of the season tonight with another win. this time against the Crystal City Javelinas. The Javelinas were able to put one touchdown on the board during the first half.

Fans packed the Honey Bowl and the atmosphere was brimming with excitement.

The Uvalde Hesperian made it to the game during halftime, and caught the second half of the game. Both teams had strong defensive lines. However, the Coyote offensive line was stronger and was able to gain yardage by running the ball for a good part of the game. The quarterback for the Javelinas did attempt several passes but most were incomplete. During the third quarter, the Coyotes were able to intercept a Javelina pass and claim the ball.

A timeout was called for an injury of one of the Uvalde players in the third quarter and for much of the second half, Coyotes played conservatively by running the ball and grinding out yardage while the Coyote defensive line kept the Javelina’s offensive line from gaining the yards needed for first downs.  Near the end of the fourth quarter with less than 5 minutes left on the clock. .the Coyotes did try to pass the ball but the play was incomplete.

The final score of the game was Coyotes: 21, Javelinas: 7

Last week was busy for the Uvalde Community. it  began on Thursday as Uvalde High School alum, Roland Ramirez, the Director of Player Care and Sports Medicine  for the Houston Texans along with owners Cal and Hannah McNair, Head Coach Lovie Smith, players Kamu Grugier-Hill and Christian Kirksey, and many others surprised the Uvalde Coyote Varsity Football team during the weekly team dinner. The following day, the Coyotes were presented with all new gear and box seats for the Texans season opener against the Indianapolis Colts on September 11th courtesy of the McNair family and HEB. The halftime ceremony honored the 1972 State Championship. The Coyotes ended the night with a gutsy and emotional victory.

Saturday began with the Labor Day weekend grand parade with the theme of “Uvalde Strong ”, the crowd fell silent as the families of  the victims of May 24th walked with the pictures of their child in their hands. Later that day, the Class of ’72 met for their 50th reunion. Rain could not stop the fun and the live entertainment at the Palomino Festival where this year all proceeds from the event will be distributed to the victims and survivors of May 24th.

The  first day of school for Uvalde was Tuesday amidst trepidation, anxiety, and excitement. UCISD evoked new security measures, but more improvements need to be made. Uvalde surely felt the love as hundreds of Texas school districts  flooded Facebook with pictures as they traded in their school colors for one day for maroon. In the picture Laredo United South High School is showing their love
