VIDEO: Hundreds attend NW Screwworm Meeting: Expert Panel lays out Facts and State’s response plans

About 300 plus attended the NW Screwworm Community Meeting sponsored by Spear AG during the morning session and over a hundred attended the evening session held at the Uvalde County Fairplex Events Center. Texas State Senator District 80 Don McLaughlin appeared with two other State officials at the evening meeting covering recent updates on Texas Counties where Screwworm cases have been confirmed as well as what animals are at risk.

The two-hour meetings discussed the animals at risk and steps ranchers, farmers, pet owners and locals should take to identify possible screwworm larvae infections on animals and how to report the problem. One official stressed the key way to address the problem is to keep “eyes-on” animals. They went on to stress the importance of looking for any odd behaviors and monitor any wounds that the NW Screwworm larvae could infect.

The Uvalde Hesperian will post additional information presented at the meeting in a future report.

U.C. Commissioners to consider and act on 2025 approval of Sheriffs and Constables Fees at Monday’s July 8th meeting

The Uvalde County Commissioner’s Court will be meeting on Monday, July 8th at 10AM in the Commissioner’s Courtroom of the Uvalde County Courthouse to consider and act upon a slate of agenda

items including possible approval of 2025 Sheriffs and Constable fees.

U.C.Commissioners Pargas and Yeackle absent from Monday’s Court meeting

Two empty seats were seen at this morning’s Monday, February 12th Uvalde County Commissioners Court meeting held on the third floor of the Uvalde County Courthouse.

Among the agenda items discussed were extending the contract for Servpro for fire damage remediation services for the 2923 arson fire contained in the Uvalde County Tax office located on the 1st floor of the Courthouse.

It was stated at the meeting the flooring of the offices contains asbestos.

A second Servepro contract for the Uvalde County Justice Center was approved to remediate leaks which are preventing the Grand Jury from holding meetings at the courtroom located at the Center. Currently, the grand jury is meeting at another location nearby at the Uvalde County FairPlex.

Commissioners also approved the purchase of a new sound system for the Uvalde County Fairplex. Fairplex Director Wendy Speers presented the purchase request stating the new system was needed for sound to reach the entire arena.

Commissioners also approved a bid of $1500 for the sale of a small plot of land located in a residential area near Oppenheimer Street. The bid which was placed at a courthouse steps property sale was lower than the minimum bid price. According to a source, the property was so small it would not be suitable to build anything on but would only be of value to expand the size a neighboring property effectively putting the property back on the tax rolls.

The mother of a Robb School student injured during the May 24th, 2922 tragedy spoke to the Court stating that Comissioner Pargas should not receive payment for his position on the Court going on ti say he can’t make meetings and is incapable of leading.

Thursday, August 31st was the opening night of Palomino Fest and about 9 PM there was still a crowd of people standing in line to ride many of the rides. At this year’s Palomino Fest there are plenty of rides, games, food and more. Thursday featured free admission and $1 rides and all you can ride wristbands for $30 each.

Starting, Friday, September 1st through Sunday, September 3rd, each day will feature a full schedule of live music, events and other entertainment.

The First State Bank Labor Day Weekend Grand Parade will take place on Saturday, September 2nd starting at 10 AM on Getty Street in the Uvalde Downtown Area.

The Uvalde Hesperian visited the opening night of Palomino Fest and took several pictures at the event.

Agenda for the Monday, May 26th Uvalde County Court Meeting

The Uvalde County Commissioner’s Court is scheduled to meet today, Monday, June 26th at 10 AM on the 3rd floor of the Uvalde County Courthouse in the Commissioner’s Courtroom to discuss several items on the agenda.

Among the items to be considered and discussed include a report on the Uvalde County Fairplex’s economic impact which was tabled at the June 14th meeting as the U.C Fairplex Director, Wendy Speer was not in attendance.

The Uvalde Hesperian plans to be at the meeting.

Entries will open through PROCOM Friday, December 30, 2022. Membership through the PRCA/WPRA must be confirmed by Thursday, December 29, 2022. For contestants needed Stalls/RVs, go to www.openstalls.com and find this event (San Antonio Rodeo Qualifier, Uvalde, TX).

The events from January 9 – 13 will be open to the public for free. Our main rodeo performance on Saturday, January 14 will be a ticketed event, on sale for $15.

Business returned as usual as the Uvalde County Commissioner’s Court held their first meeting of the new year. The minutes were read and budgets were passed. Judge Bill Mitchell designated federal grant monies from the May 24th Massacre to several different agencies that will be part of the Resiliency Center.

Saddle up, Uvalde is hosting the San Antonio Rodeo Qualifiers this week, you can go check out the rodeo action at the Uvalde County Fairplex all week. The top qualifiers will be determined on Saturday night and will be given an official PCRA card which makes them eligible for all PCRA events including February’s San Antonio Rodeo.

Lastly, a few relatives of the 21 victims of the mass shooting continued to urge Commissioner Mariano Pargas to resign from his position to no avail.
