The Uvalde Police Department cleared Walmart and the store’s parking lot early Saturday afternoon May 4th in response to a bomb threat.

At 1:02PM The Uvalde Police Department posted the following on its Facebook Page: “Uvalde & surrounding area residents, please be advised that the Uvalde Walmart is currently being evacuated for the public’s safety. We ask that you please allow law enforcement officials the space and time to make sure that the store does not contain anything that can harm the public at large. Your safety is our main concern.”

An update was then added to the original post:

UPDATE (2:32 pm)

UVALDE WALMART HAS BEEN CLEARED AND IS NOW OPENED TO THE PUBLIC. We appreciate all local agencies that assisted in ensuring the public’s safety.”

The Uvalde Hesperian reached out to Uvalde Police Chief Homer Delgado this morning and he said, “Staff sergeant E. Canales was the one scene incident commander with Assistant chief Davis and Chief Delgado assisting with planning and decision making utilizing the new LTE radio system. Hwy 90 was closed so that we could have Walmart employees evacuate to Texbest across the highway.”

Officials seen assembled at Tex Best Convenience Store

A few store employees and customers stood across the street near Applebees. One Walmart employee was supposed to go in for his/her shift but was blocked from entering the property. One individual told Hesperian he was sleeping in his car in the parking lot and reported he was told to leave the premises.

“I had just left the women’s bathroom near the electronics but only saw one young girl. They made everyone leave the parking lot and Walmart employees ended up at AT&T facing Highway 90 and across from Applebees blocked off from turning into that area,” Stephanie Clary said.

She stated while she was at the checkout near the grocery section, she saw a Uvalde Police Officer and a Uvalde County Sheriff’s Officer standing close by

Clary went on to say when she saw two agencies together, and she thought, “That’s odd.”

She observed people standing around the front of the store and an unidentified woman told the crowd to leave the store.

” It was all very surreal.” she said

Cheryl Renfro was also at the Walmart Saturday afternoon, and she said, “I was there- evacuated everyone had employees go across to Tex-Best. Cleared parking lot. Police at Wal Mart- some had guns drawn, ambulance and fire dept all across Hwy at Tex Best.”

The Uvalde Hesperian was on the scene and noticed all the entrances were blocked by Police officials. Between 2PM and 2:30 PM, the Uvalde Hesperian noticed officials closing Highway 90 and blocking access to Tex Best Convenience Store.

On Monday, May 5th at about 9AM, the Uvalde Police Department issued this statement on its Facebook page:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Uvalde Police Respond to Threat at Walmart; Store Deemed Safe Following Evacuation and Search

UVALDE, TEXAS – On the afternoon of Saturday, May 3, 2025, the Uvalde Police Department received a phone call from a number with a California area code. The male caller reported that he had placed an explosive device in the men’s restroom at the Walmart located in Uvalde. The caller further claimed to be armed with a firearm and threatened to begin shooting if the alleged explosive device did not detonate.

In response, emergency personnel from across the area quickly mobilized and arrived on scene. As a precautionary measure, Walmart management and responding emergency crews conducted a full evacuation of the store to ensure the safety of employees and customers.

Specialized teams, in coordination with Walmart management, conducted a thorough search of the premises for any suspicious items or indications of danger. After a complete inspection, no threats or hazardous materials were found. Based on these findings, the store was determined to be secure, and the “All-Clear” was issued.

Uvalde Police Chief Homer Delgado

‘”This type of threat disrupts the lives of our community members and strains emergency resources,” said Chief Homer E. Delgado. “We take every threat seriously and will continue to work diligently to identify and prosecute the individual responsible for this reckless and dangerous act.”

The Uvalde Police Department has launched a full investigation and is working with regional and federal partners to track down the suspect. Anyone with information related to this incident is encouraged to contact the Uvalde Police Department at (830) 278-9147 or through our anonymous tip line.

We thank the public for their patience and cooperation during this incident, as well as the emergency response teams for their swift and professional actions.'”

A suspicious 911 phone call prompted Uvalde CISD to place Uvalde High and Morales Junior High Schools on Hold status as law enforcement responded to a potential threat. LaPryor ISD placed their campuses on in Secure status as a result of the call.

A student of either Uvalde High School or Morales Junior High posted a picture on social media Thursday afternoon of an officer with a shotgun in a school’s hallway with the caption, “Hell Yeah”

Uvalde County Constable Emmanuel Zamora posted on his Facebook page that a large police presence was observed at 1:45PM.

Ther following timeline was also posted by Zamora:

1:45 PM: Uvalde CISD schools are being extra patrolled due to a suspicious call.
Uvalde CISD Police are CONFIRMING everything is ok. Updates will be provided ASAP.
UPDATE: 2:02 PM by UCISD.
Morales Junior High and Uvalde High School are on a Hold Status due to an incident that was called into the Uvalde PD regarding the Uvalde High School. Uvalde CISD PD, DPS Troopers, and Uvalde PD are on the campus to sweep the campus. Parents are asked not to visit the campuses at this time. More information will be released shortly.
2:18 pm
Update to our Morales Junior High and Uvalde High School Caregivers….
The Hold Status has been lifted at both campuses. Your cooperation and patience were very much appreciated. Please know that there will be an increased police presence at both campuses. We are asking parents and caregivers to allow the school day to return to the normal schedule and allow a regular dismissal of the school day. This incident directly resulted from a swatting hoax called into the Uvalde PD. The district is working with all law enforcement agencies to gather more information to be released as it becomes available. Your support and cooperation are greatly appreciated.
Parent J. Anson Bills stated that he observed other parents’ cars on 2nd Street and Studer street causing increased traffic which in the event of a real emergency could delay 1st responders in reaching the schools.
Uvalde CISD released the following statement as a press release:
“Today, an unfortunate situation unfolded when the Uvalde Police Department received a 911 call shortly before 2 p.m., reporting an active shooter on the third floor of Uvalde High School. We want to emphasize that Uvalde High School does not have a third floor. Nevertheless, the Uvalde Police Department, DPS Troopers, Border Patrol, and Uvalde CISD Police Department responded promptly and conducted a comprehensive sweep of the campus. As a precaution, Uvalde High School and Morales Junior High were placed on Hold Status to ensure student safety by bringing them indoors and clearing the hallways. A lockdown was not initiated, as no active threat was identified on or around the campus.

We are relieved to confirm that no active shooter was found following a thorough search, and the claims were determined to be false. This incident has been classified as a swatting hoax, especially since a similar call was made to a school in San Antonio. To maintain safety and provide peace of mind, there was a heightened police presence at both campuses until the conclusion of the school day.

We acknowledge the anxiety and fear that such situations can cause among our students, staff, and community members. It is important to remind everyone that counseling support is available for students who may need it, and they are encouraged to reach out to their campus counselors. Additionally, community resources can be accessed on the Uvalde CISD webpage under the Counseling Resources section, providing access to Counseling/Behavioral Health Service Providers.

We extend our gratitude to the Uvalde Police Department, DPS Troopers, Border Patrol, and the Uvalde CISD Police Department for their swift and coordinated response, showcasing professionalism during these critical moments. Rest assured, our top priorities remain the safety and well-being of our students and staff. We are committed to maintaining a secure and nurturing educational environment for everyone.”

Earlier today, Thursday, February 1st,  Uvalde CISD received information a student may have brought a gun onto the Morales Jr. High Campus. A San Antonio news station reporter informed the Uvalde Hesperian a call was received from a parent who said their son told them that someone allegedly has a gun on the campus of Morales Junior High.

The Uvalde Hesperian spoke with an employee of the district who said officials had secured the gun.

The following letter from Uvalde CISD Superintendent Ashley Chohlis was sent out to parents of students earlier today:

“February 1, 2024
To Our Uvalde CISD Parents & Guardians,
This letter is to inform you that a Morales Junior High student brought a handgun to school
today. Our school is committed to the safety and education of all our students. We want to
communicate with parents about safety issues when they arise.

The campus officer received a report from a student of the weapon in possession. The student
was identified, and the weapon was confiscated. The student in control of the handgun showed a
few students; please know it was not used to threaten students.
As with all matters of student safety, we have taken this very seriously. This act is a violation of
law and the Student Code of Conduct. The students face disciplinary action and have been
removed from the campus.

Please discuss this incident with your child/children and emphasize that it is against the law to
bring weapons of any type to school. In addition, please highlight the importance of telling you
or a staff member if your child ever becomes aware of a weapon on district property. This way,
we are all working together to keep our school safe. Only by working as a school community in
partnership with parents can we create and maintain the level of safety that we want for our
children and that they deserve.”

On Friday, September 8th, Knippa ISD Superintendent Benny Henandez sent out a letter to parents of students informing them of an incident involving a gun occuring that same day. The unnamed staff member, according to Hernandez, was licensed and authorized to carry a firearm on campus and had dropped an unloaded gun while inside a gym class. The letter did not say if any students were present or nearby in the class when the incident occurred although it did indicate students were enrolled in that class.

The letter stated that no one was injured as a result of the weapon falling out of a concealed carry fanny pack,

As a result of the incident, Hernandez said, “Moving forward, the District will require that all people licensed to carry guns will have a holster in their possession to properly secure the weapon. “

Earlier this year during the spring, The Knippa ISD school board approved allowing for staff members who had enrolled in special firearms training through a district approved program to carry guns on campus.

Over the summer, the Knippa ISD campus installed additional high fencing around the campus.

Editor’s Note: In the origional post, Knippa ISD Superintendent Banny Hernandez name was listed incorrectly. The error has been corrected and the Uvalde Hesperian regrets the error.

Report by Michael Robinson | Uvalde Hesperian

A 17-year-old boy claiming to be the cousin of the Uvalde school shooter was arrested and charged with making terroristic threats against an Edgewood ISD school in San Antonio according to a report on Monday, August 7th by News4 San Antonio

A News 4 San Antonio Report stated, “According to court documents, the teen’s mother reported that the suspect was planning to ‘do the same thing’ as his cousin.”  “The suspect had made these statements to his sister, who notified their mother, who called the police.”

The report also stated the suspect was on probation and was intoxicated when he was overheard making the threats.

Edgewood ISD is located on the west side of San Antonio.

Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez issued the following statement:

“When this family saw something, they said something. And law enforcement listened and took this threat seriously. Thankfully, a few individuals prevented a disaster. I’m glad the Uvalde community didn’t see another horror play out in Texas. But it shouldn’t take an overheard conversation or luck. Our laws should protect us, not fortune. That is not safety we can count on. Had this young man been just one year older, he would have been able to purchase an AR-15 anywhere in Texas.”

UHS Graduation; We will take every precaution: We will have metal detectors and officers there as well as extra officers

Uvalde Superintendent Gary Patterson delivered his report Monday night, May 15 during the Uvalde CISD board meeting.

Patterson said that graduation will go on as scheduled on May 26th and Monday, May 22nd will be the last day for students.

“Graduation will take all the necessary precautions. With the rise in the threats and the internet chatter, I’m afraid we’re going to need to take all the necessary precautions,” Patterson said.

He continued by saying, “We’ll have metal detectors there and will have enough officers there. We can funnel our crowd into four different locations and get them in pretty quickly and we’ll have extra officers there.”

In Patterson’s report, he discussed social media threats, one of which promoted 90% of parents to pick up their children from schools by the end of the day on Friday, May 12th. School Districts in Del Rio and Eagle Pass also received threats that day. He said that the district received the report at 6:30 AM. ” I want to thank the parents and staff for the way they handled that situation,” he said.

Patterson went on to say teachers covered for other teachers worked through conference periods and lunch periods to help get the kids in and out.

“Today we wanted to keep a close eye on attendance all day.  Patterson also stated that Monday’s May 15th attendance was down at the district’s campuses with attendance at 60% at the Junior High and 58 to 60% at Dalton, 49 % at Batesville, 62% at Uvalde Elementary and UDLA and the High School were around 76%,” he said.

“These internet threats are designed to spread fear and anxiety and stress and disruption and they succeeded on Friday for sure,” Patterson said.

“We believe these students are safe in school,” Patterson said. In regards to decisions to release students early from school, his concern is if the students will be going home without anyone being home.

As far as parents who may choose to not send their children to school the superintendent asked that those parents communicate with the school. He stated those students will not be punished, but there are tests and end of year school work that needs to be done. “No-one is going to get punished except if they don’t do their work,” he said.  He continued by saying if they, the students, are missing assignments to please contact us as we will find a way to get that work in.

Two threats prompt investigations by Uvalde CISD and the Uvalde Police Department

On Friday, February 10th, Uvalde CISD issued the following statement about an incident involving a student claiming he/she possessed a weapon:

February 10, 2023 – Uvalde CISD Addresses
Offhanded Weapon Statement

Early on February 10th, our administration was alerted of a student who offhandedly stated a weapon was in possession. This statement, similar to all references to weapons, was taken seriously. The Uvalde CISD Police Chief was immediately involved to ensure a thorough and complete investigation was conducted. The conclusion of the investigation revealed the student was joking. This is not a joking matter; the student will face the appropriate consequences.

District Administration, including Uvalde High School administration, are sending a parent letter home to inform Uvalde High School parents of the situation. Parent support is greatly needed in reinforcing with our students the seriousness of making references to possessing a weapon, making offhanded threats, or reposting a threat on social media. All reports of weapons and threats to our students, staff, and schools are taken very seriously, are investigated thoroughly, and can be considered criminal offenses.

We encourage parents to speak with their child(ren) about making the right choices and the potential consequences of their actions. We will continue to work together to keep all our students safe and help them make positive choices for themselves and our community. Uvalde CISD Administration appreciates your cooperation, patience, and understanding as we work together to provide a safe educational setting for our students and staff.

Earlier this week on Wednesday, May 8th, the Uvalde Police Department issued this alert on it’s Facebook page about a report it received about a threat made by a Uvalde CISD Virtual Academy student:
