Press release from SWTX

10/24/24

UVALDE, TEXAS

Southwest Texas College (SWTX) has announced plans to significantly expand its technical education offerings with the launch of Phase Two of its Tech Expansion Project. The project, approved by the college’s Board of Trustees on October 17, aims to enhance educational infrastructure and provide students access to in-demand career programs.

Phase Two’s key components include expanding Del Rio and Eagle Pass programs.

  Chittim Technical Campus Expansion:

Cosmetology Program: A new 7,000-square-foot building will be constructed to accommodate the growing demand for cosmetology education.

HVAC Program: A dedicated 7,000-square-foot facility will be built to support the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning program, which will provide students with hands-on training.

Law Enforcement Academy: Move the program to the Eagle Pass Annex campus.

  Del Rio Campus Expansion:

Welding and Construction Science Program: A 12,000-square-foot building will be constructed to house these programs, addressing the need for skilled workers in these industries.

Power Line Technician Program: A 20,000-square-foot Power Line Tech pad will be developed to support the launch of this program, which will offer students practical training in this essential field.

  Building on Phase One Success:

Phase One of the Tech Expansion Project, which focused on building a new warehouse, relocating the Powerline Technology and Construction Science programs, and adding Diesel Technology Specialized in Heavy Equipment, Professional Truck Driving, Cyber Security, and Surgical Technology Programs, has been a resounding success. The project has involved the construction of new facilities, paving, electrical work, and other infrastructure improvements.

SWTX President Dr. Hector Gonzales expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “This expansion is a testament to our commitment to providing students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in today’s competitive job market. By investing in state-of-the-art facilities and programs, we are equipping our students to become leaders in their chosen fields.”

Gonzales added, “We are grateful for the leadership of Tracy King Texas State Representative – District 80, whose efforts in the legislature were instrumental in securing a $5 million special appropriation in State funds to expand the college’s technical programs. The college also extends its sincere thanks to Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez and Texas State Representative Eddie Morales for their unwavering support throughout the legislative process, ensuring the funds were included in the final State budget. This critical funding will play a pivotal role in advancing SWTX’s mission to equip students with the skills needed to thrive in today’s job market.”

During the November 2023 board of trustees meeting, SWTX board members voted to approve the first phase of a tech expansion project.

The in-house build process cost is $1.5 million of the $4 million set aside for the first phase of its tech expansion. The $2.5 million difference came from State funds allocated to help develop technical programs in the Southwest Texas region.

Press release from SWTC

  UVALDE, TEXAS

(09-10-2024) Southwest Texas College (SWTX) recently celebrated the legacy of Jesse T. Moreno, Jr. by awarding the Jesse T. Moreno, Jr. Memorial Scholarship to five deserving first-year students in the college’s registered nursing program. This scholarship, presented on August 16 in Uvalde, is a financial aid and a significant tribute to Moreno’s dedication to nursing and education.

This year’s recipients of the $500 scholarship include Heidy Cordova of Eagle Pass, Elda Ibarra of Del Rio, Cristina Garza of Asherton, Gisselle Martinez, and Iliena Lara of Uvalde. It provides vital financial assistance to these students as they embark on their journey in the SWTX nursing program, making a significant difference in their lives.

Jesse T. Moreno, Jr., born on October 23, 1957, was a proud Uvalde native. He graduated from Uvalde High School in 1976 and continued his education at Southwest Texas College, previously known as SWTJC, where he earned an Associate of Arts degree in 1978. Moreno’s passion for nursing led him to the University of Texas Health Science Center School of Nursing in San Antonio, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1981.

Moreno’s nursing career began at Bexar County Hospital, now known as University Hospital, in San Antonio. His career later took him to New York, where he married Loretta Donnelly and welcomed their first son, Christopher Jesus Moreno. In 1991, Jesse returned to Texas, settling in Kerrville and joining the Kerrville VA Hospital. During this time, he and Loretta celebrated the birth of their second son, Eric Elisandro Moreno.

A man of many passions, Jesse loved running, fishing, camping, and hunting, especially when accompanied by family and friends. However, his greatest joy came from his two sons, who were the light of his life.

Moreno’s life and career were marked by a deep commitment to his patients and the nursing profession. His dedication was unwavering, and he continued working as a Registered Nurse at the Kerrville VA Hospital for 22 years until his untimely death at 56. After a courageous 16-year battle with multiple myeloma, Jesse passed away peacefully at his home on January 27, 2014.

SWTX President Hector Gonzales, Vice President of Student Services Cruz Mata, Moreno’s sister Nora and husband Raul Gonzalez, and Moreno’s father Jesse Moreno were also at the ceremony.

The Jesse T. Moreno, Jr. Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a first-year registered nursing student at SWTX. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in their prerequisite courses and submit a 200-word essay detailing their background, motivations for pursuing a nursing career, and challenges.

SWTX’s registered nursing program is designed to prepare graduates to practice in a dynamic and evolving healthcare environment. The program’s rigorous curriculum and dedicated faculty ensure that students are well-equipped to meet the demands of the nursing profession.

Interested individuals are encouraged to contact Sandra Flores at sflores2@swtjc.edu or (830) 591-7271 for more information about the Jesse T. Moreno, Jr. Memorial Scholarship.

Born in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, Librado’s educational path took him to Eagle Pass, where he attended elementary through junior high. Rodriguez then went on to attend St. Anthony’s Catholic High School in San Antonio, where he graduated as part of the Class of 1998. That same year, he enrolled at SWTJC to begin his general studies.

Librado excelled in his academic pursuits and actively contributed to the diesel program as a lab assistant from 2006 to 2009, showcasing his commitment to the program’s success.   Southwest Texas Junior College (SWTJC) and Union Pacific Railroad held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the expansion of its diesel program in Eagle Pass. The ceremony took place April 23, at the Jack R. Chittim Technical Campus in Eagle Pass.

Following the successful partnership announcement back in May 2022, where Union Pacific committed $380,000 to the La Frontera Diesel Program Expansion Project, this ribbon cutting marks a significant milestone in furthering industrial trade careers in the region. Union Pacific’s generous contribution aims to address the growing need for skilled bus and diesel mechanics in the area by expanding student capacity and enhancing hands-on training opportunities.

The agenda for the ceremony included distinguished guests such as Dr. Mark Underwood, SWTJC Vice President of Academic Affairs, SWTJC Board of Trustees President Dr. Harry Watkins, SWTJC Eagle Pass Campus Vice President Brenda Hoffman, Ramsey E. Cantu Maverick County Judge, City of Eagle Pass Mayor Rolando Salinas, Texas State Representative Eddie Morales, and Raquel Espinoza Senior Director of Public Affairs at Union Pacific. Derek Sandoval, Vice President of Administrative Services at SWTJC, served as the Master of Ceremonies.

“Today we would like to thank our partner, Union Pacific, for being a core collaborator and significantly contributing to expanding opportunities for Southwest Texas college students in our diesel technology program,” said Hoffman. “Your support will greatly integrate passion in the lives of many. Let’s continue building community together. Let’s continue building America.”

The ceremony culminated with the official ribbon cutting, symbolizing the inauguration of the enhanced training facility. Attendees had the opportunity to take photos with students, faculty and the newly expanded facilities.

SWTJC and Union Pacific remain committed to fostering the next generation of trade professionals and providing them with the skills and opportunities necessary for success in the workforce.

Press Release from SWTJC

The SWTJC Friends and Alumni Network (FAN) hosted the president’s gala on Saturday, April 13, where $11,000 was raised for scholarships. Two hundred fifty guests attended the event.

The evening was a celebration of community partnership and a testament to the enduring spirit of collaboration.

The gala brought together partners from various sectors, including representatives from the local government, school districts, financial institutions, health care providers and business community. Dr. Hector Gonzales, President of SWTJC, expressed profound gratitude to all attendees, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in driving success.

In his poignant address, Dr. Gonzales echoed the sentiments of Helen Keller, underscoring the transformative power of unity. He emphasized, “Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much!” This sentiment resonated throughout the evening, highlighting the significance of partnerships with local school districts, universities and the business community in expanding access to education, fostering workforce development and community growth.

The gala served as a platform to acknowledge the remarkable achievements of SWTJC amid challenging times, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gonzales commended the institution’s resilience and adaptability, citing innovative, remote learning and community engagement.

Highlighting the strides made in recent years, President Gonzales shared notable accomplishments, including significant grant awards totaling over $20 million, expansion of technical programs, and a noteworthy increase in SWTJC’s fund balance and tax valuation.

Moreover, Dr. Gonzales unveiled SWTJC’s transition to Southwest Texas College, marking a pivotal moment in the institution’s evolution. The name change reflects a broader vision, encompassing plans to offer bachelor’s degrees while honoring the institution’s rich legacy of serving Southwest Texas for over 78 years.

The president’s gala celebrated past achievements and laid the groundwork for future endeavors. Gonzales thanked the board of trustees, faculty, staff, partners, and attendees for their unwavering support and dedication to the institution’s mission.

In closing, Dr. Gonzales invoked the words of Henry Ford, emphasizing the importance of unity and collaboration. He thanked attendees for their continued belief in SWTJC’s mission and commitment to student success.

The funds raised during the gala will support scholarships benefiting students across SWTJC’s service area, furthering the college’s mission of enriching lives and advancing growth through education.
