Earlier this week on Tuesday morning, May 27th, dozens of children and their parents were seen at the El Progreso Memorial Library waiting in line at the circulation desk to sign up for the library’s annual summer reading program.  Library Director Tammie Sinclair published a Facebook video that day announcing everyone that signed up that day for the summer reading program would get a ticket for a free snow cone.

Those participating in the program keep a log of the books they read and once they reach the number of books read, each participant is eligible to win prizes.

Signups continue for the summer reading program so it’s not too late to start as this summer will likely be a page turning experience.

More about the summer reading program

The Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) supports Texas summer programs in partnership with the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) –  a consortium of all 50 states working together to make high quality reading materials available at the lowest cost possible for libraries.
The 2024 CSLP theme is Adventure, and the slogan is “Adventure Begins at Your Library” or “La aventura comienza en tu biblioteca.”
Children learn about communication, language, storytelling, and letters long before they actually learn to read and write, and this is where early literacy comes in. Research on early literacy and child development indicates that it is never too early to start preparing children for reading success.
Children who have been read to from an early age have a larger vocabulary, acquire better language skills, and are more likely to want to learn to read than children who have not been read to. In addition, research has shown that children need to develop certain skills in order to fully benefit from the reading instruction they receive when they arrive at school. Library staff play a key role in helping young patrons develop those skills and in educating parents and other caregivers about their crucial role as their children’s first teachers.

Dozens of happy youngsters had a great day at El Progreso Memorial Library July 26th for the 2023 Summer Reading Program “All Together Now” finale.  Mark Fuller of Twister Art in San Antonio was special guest ready for preschool Story Hour.  He also helped pull names for the 26 prizes awarded and then offered a second reading hour in costume featuring “The Knight and the Dragon”.  This was enhanced by balloon twisting making swords and fanciful animals for the delighted kids!  A face painter was in the rotunda to create whimsical face designs on children and adults alike.

Alice Sanchez of Med C. Snowie brought her setup from San Antonio to give free snowcones.  The local Walmart and HEB were co-hosts for cupcakes, drink pouches, and various snacks.  Other children were involved with making quilts in the meeting room and the girls signed up for Rise, Read and Write were continuing their seminar.

Everyone loved the five colorful Art Cars from Houston which were on hand for all to see and discuss from 10 a.m. ’til almost two p.m.  The library wants to thank everyone who made Summer Reading such a success including volunteer guest readers from the Uvalde Memorial Hospital, Ranger Jake, Sharon Shimp, Ciara Cheketts and those who gave prizes or money for prizes:  Michael Sanchez, Walmart, the Uvalde Rotary club, the Esparza Family, Tammie Sinclair, Shelly Pivoda, Friends of the Library, anonymous cash award donor, the New Vasquez Restaurant, Uvalde Country Club and River Rim Resort.
