 ” I QUESTION HOW PEOPLE’S DONATIONS WERE ‘handled’. “

Letter submitted by Judy Brady-Sertich, a resident of San Antonio

Thursday, August 8th, 2024

Dear UVALDE STRONG,

    Hello. My name is Judy Brady-Sertich.  I have endured the criminal insanity of corruption intricately interwoven throughout those in positions of authority, within city departments, agencies, companies as well as Bexar County, State and Federal programs here in San Antonio for over 30 years !

  WHEN WE WATCHED IN HORROR AS A MOTHER WAS HANDCUFFED, FORCED ON HER KNEES, OUT IN THE STREET BECAUSE SHE WAS GOING TO GO IN TO DO WHAT ALL THOSE DO NOTHING BUNCH OF DISGUSTING LAW “enforcement” CHICKEN SHITS, WOULDN’T…GO GET HER BOYS OUT OF THAT MAYHEM…A SECOND PARENT WAS PEPPER SPRAYED THEN ROUGHLY FLUNG TO THE GROUND …FOR THE SAME REASON…HE WAS BRAVE ENOUGH TO WANT TO GO IN AND GET HIS CHILD!

   I was screaming at my T.V. because l am a former military spouse and was completely bewildered by 300 grown ass men LETTING CHILDREN AND THEIR TEACHERS BE VICIOUSLY TRAUMATIZED before THEY WERE KILLED! FRANTICALLY CALLING 911, EVEN HAVING THE SURVIVAL INSTINCTS TO REACH OVER AND SMEAR HER DEAD FRIEND’S BLOOD ON HERSELF AND PLAY DEAD.

    I PRAY FOR HER AND THE TEACHER BLAMED BY THE MEDIA AS BEING RESPONSIBLE ???  BECAUSE SHE LEFT A SIDE DOOR OPEN.

  I HAVE SEEN HER INTERVIEWS AND WHAT THAT LEVEL OF PUBLIC Cruelty DID TO HER MIND! I STILL QUESTION WHY NO T.V. NETWORK, EITHER LOCAL OR NATIONAL REPORTED THAT THE MAMA BEAR, HANDCUFFED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET …CONNED THOSE BALLESS MEN INTO RELEASING HER.  THEN SHE WENT IN THAT LIFE THREATENING HELL HOLE AND GOT HER BOYS!

   To this day we do not know the facts of her bravery, determination or how many children she managed to out as gutless creeps …no words ugly enough to properly describe!

     As is instinctive with Texans, l waited anxiously for information on where to send donations.   Was there no one there volunteering or designated to set up a place, system, bank to receive the gifts that poured in from all over the world? To date, we have never heard whether our donations…SACRIFICIAL IN MANY CASES..have been released to the victims

   And because of BUSINESS AS USUAL IN CORRUPT SAN ANTONIO…I think different than most people. I didn’t trust that sending money would ever reach y’all.  No bank had been identified or email or any instructions released. So I waited.

    Weeks later l heard that school supplies were being asked for. Being a former Special Ed substitute teacher’s aide and Sunday School teacher ideas flooded my mind.WHAT WOULD REACH THE HEARTS OF YOUR BROKEN CHILDREN AND BREATH CRUSHED OUT OF YOU PARENTS WITH OTHER CHILDREN ALSO NEEDING SPECIAL ATTENTION??

   The first thing I did was call my 4 grandkids in Virginia. Yes, they had heard about your tragedy/ongoing horror stories.

  No hesitation, questions or disappointment as l asked them if l could send y’all their stock piled Christmas gifts.  With four, l have to buy a little at a time. I described the activity books, a very detailed, complex dot to dot thick book for my super smart, ADHA grandson, Match Box cars for my other grandson, some razzle/dazzle sparkly clothes for my younger granddaughter and a diary…and a bracelet for my oldest granddaughter.

   I cried tears of joy as they got excited that they would be helping l told them I would put their names on their gifts for your kids. Then it occurred to me that because l have tiny wrists…that l could donate many simple bracelets l used to wear to match my work clothes outfits before l retired.

   I envisioned l little girls excited about something for the first time in weeks. They could choose which bracelet or hair decor they wanted and the little boys grabbed the cars and then they  pulled at them from each other. And maybe that puts a smile on one of your parents’ faces…cause money is so impersonal.

    I am a voracious reader so I had MANY Christian books for the older kids AND MAYBE SOME COMFORT TO YOU PARENTS.

    I hauled 3 boxes to the post office. The postman at the counter was all excited to be a part of helping y’all.  We still had not been provided with an address so he got in their computer system and found a zip code. The 2 other counter employees got excited too!  They were checking their systems for an address we hoped would reach y’all and l watched as employees and customers (who would normally complain about waiting)… were scrambling so they could write down an address.  WE CARE UVALDE STRONG!

   ( We) did not give to be recognized but hoped for a response to send back to my grandkids. Months later there was finally a blip on the news that Victims had to sign up on a list in November…to WAIT FOR DISBURSEMENT??

    I QUESTION HOW PEOPLE’S DONATIONS WERE “handled”.  Here in criminal Insanity City (San Antonio), the “norm” would be to quietly open a bank account, not say anything and draw interest off it until someone specifically asks….then pocket that interest for themselves. Did y’all ever get our donations?

   I am all upset again because your FORMER police chief went on CNN and is claiming to be a “SCAPEGOAT”. But their reporter was no fool! They unexpectedly pulled up the body cam tapes from in the school hallway clearly showing him standing there, calmly on his walkie talkie.  THEY WERE ALL STANDING THERE..DUMB ASSES ( Excuse me but words don’t do what they DIDN’T DO justice!)

   He immediately panicked when he saw their tape and was asked to verbally explain what was happening. A lawyer leaned over whispering to him and his body poster relaxed. He got a puppy dog act on his face and said he, “couldn’t talk about it  because  they were his kids too.”

   I am SO SORRY YOU ARE BEING SUBJECTED TO THIS ALL OVER AGAIN!  ALSO WANTED TO WARN YOU THAT Nico LaHood (representing him) WAS OUR FORMER DISTRICT ATTORNEY AND HIS NAME SUITS HIM “hood”.  For years he covered up and refused to prosecute our career politicians.  He’s slick and aiming for false processing of the actual arrest.

   He’s a criminal defense attorney now and stands for publicity.  He’s slimy smart.

  All l can say is GO UVALDE STRONG!

Settlement with the City has been reached. Mentions plans to sue Uvalde CISD board members and State of Texas

by Michael Robinson |Uvalde Hesperian

On the week marking the day of the two- year mark of the Robb Elementary School tragedy, Robb School Victims family members held a press conference today at noon at the Ssgt. Willie de Leon Civic Center.

About two dozen victim’s family members filed in behind the podium where Attorney Josh Koskoff stood and spoke to a room mostly filled with reporters and TV cameras. News of the press conference was reported Tuesday evening by KSAT 12. The Uvalde Hesperian learned of the press conference  on Wednesday morning, May 22nd only a few hours prior to the event.

Koskoff started the conference by asking why school shootings have become so common and what is causing them to occur. He then listed numerous cities and schools where school shootings have caused otherwise lesser known locations on the map.

“There is a tremendous amount of anger towards the City for not getting rid of its police officers who were involved on May 24th or not disciplining these officers keeping them on the payroll.”

“There is not enough money the City” ( to do what needs to be done)

“Uvalde is a tale of two cities.“

“The City picked up the phone and reached out. We haven’t heard from

the State of Texas .”

In a press release issued by Berlin Rosen on behalf of Koskoff Koskoff & Bieder and Guerra LL it states:

“The families’ settlement, the terms of which were reached through a yearlong restorative justice process in which impacted families were invited to participate along with the City of Uvalde, include efforts to rebuild and repair the Uvalde Police Department, including:

  • implementation of a new “fitness for duty” standard for Uvalde police officers, to be developed in coordination with the United States Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services;

  • a commitment from the Uvalde Police Department to provide enhanced training for current and future officers; and

  • an agreement to coordinate with the families concerning the public safety risk and burden on police due to the prevalence of gun violence.

In addition to these policy changes aimed at preventing a repeat of local law enforcement failures, the settlement also includes a number of stipulations to support the Uvalde community’s long overdue healing process. The City of Uvalde commits to:

  • establishing May 24th as an annual Day of Remembrance;

  • creating a committee that will coordinate with the families to design a permanent memorial at the Plaza, which the City will fund;

  • continuing to support mental health services for the families, survivors and the greater Uvalde community; and

  • continuing to work with third party entities to bring new developments for children and families in the Uvalde area.

  In addition to the impactful and long-lasting steps above, the City of Uvalde will also pay to the families from its insurance coverage a total of $2 million. Pursuing further legal action against the City could have plunged Uvalde into bankruptcy, something that none of the families were interested in as they look for the community to heal. ”

City of Uvalde Statement on Settlement with Families of Robb Elementary Shooting Victims

Press release from the City of Uvalde: May 22nd.2024
UVALDE, TX – Today, the City of Uvalde issued the following statement after reaching a settlement agreement with the families of victims of the May 24, 2022 Robb Elementary School shooting:
“Today, we are thankful to join the victims’ families in arriving at an agreement that will allow us to remember the Robb Elementary tragedy while moving forward together as a community to bring healing and restoration to all those affected. We will forever be grateful to the victims’ families for working with us over the past year to cultivate an environment of community-wide healing that honors the lives and memories of those we tragically lost. May 24th is our community’s greatest tragedy.”

19 UVALDE FAMILIES ANNOUNCE SETTLEMENT WITH CITY; LAWSUIT AGAINST STATE LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS AND SCHOOL DISTRICT

Press Release from Berlin Rosen

 Developments follow DOJ review that found lives would have been saved if not for unprecedented failures that enabled the brutal killing of children and teachers

UVALDE, TX—Nineteen families whose loved ones were murdered or injured in the mass shooting at Robb Elementary today announced a settlement with the City of Uvalde that includes a number of stipulations and commitments intended to help the families and larger Uvalde community continue to heal from the tragic shooting.

The families also announced legal action against the Texas Department of Public Safety (TXDPS), via lawsuits against 92 individual officers as required by law, for the shocking and extensive failures of TXDPS that day. Additionally, the lawsuit names the Uvalde School District and several of its individual employees, including then-Robb Elementary Principal Mandy Gutierrez and then-Chief Pedro “Pete” Arredondo, as defendants.

“For two long years, we have languished in pain and without any accountability from the law enforcement agencies and officers who allowed our families to be destroyed that day. This settlement reflects a first good faith effort by the City of Uvalde to begin rebuilding trust in the systems that failed to protect us,” said Veronica Luevanos, whose daughter Jailah and nephew Jayce were killed. “But it wasn’t just Uvalde officers who failed us that day. Nearly 100 officers from the Texas Department of Public Safety have yet to face a shred of accountability for cowering in fear while my daughter and nephew bled to death in their classroom.”

The families’ settlement, the terms of which were reached through a yearlong restorative justice process in which impacted families were invited to participate along with the City of Uvalde, include efforts to rebuild and repair the Uvalde Police Department, including:

  • implementation of a new “fitness for duty” standard for Uvalde police officers, to be developed in coordination with the United States Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services;

  • establishing May 24th as an annual Day of Remembrance;

  • creating a committee that will coordinate with the families to design a permanent memorial at the Plaza, which the City will fund;

“There is no risk more foreseeable to our children than classroom shootings. Until the corporate enablers of mass shootings start prioritizing our children above their profits, and until state and federal governments get serious about prevention, the immense burden of protecting children in schools will continue to fall on local communities like the City of Uvalde. For 77 minutes, 26 members of the Uvalde Police Department failed to confront an 18 year-old kid armed with an AR-15, and no disciplinary action has ever been taken—no firings, no demotions, no transparency—and the families remain eager for that to change. But the healing process must begin, and the commitments made today by the City are a step in that critical process,” said Josh Koskoff, partner at Koskoff, Koskoff & Bieder and attorney for the families. “The State of Texas and the school district, on the other hand, seem intent on causing these families even more hardship than the indescribable pain of losing a child. While there is nothing normal about living in a society where kids can easily get access to a military rifle, the reality is that these officers were so terrified that they chose to abandon their burden to the Uvalde community: put themselves between a very dangerous person and a child, and the families must hold them accountable.”

In the months following the Robb Elementary shooting, the families’ grief was exacerbated by the City’s restrictions and maintenance issues at victims’ gravesites at Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery, despite an influx of donated funds for that purpose. In recognition of those failures, the City also commits to:

  • regular maintenance of the Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery;

  • creating two additional at-large positions on the Cemetery Advisory Board to be filled by members from the families;

  • reimbursing the families for the cost of repairing ornamentation at the victims’ gravesites, which the families had previously paid for themselves from donated gravesite funds which the City holds; and

  • continuing to provide updated accounting of all donations the City has received in connection with the Robb Elementary shooting and the spending of such funds.

“Uvalde is a city in need of healing, and this settlement, the terms of which were reached through open, difficult conversations, is an important step forward in that process. The families we represent have every right to be distrustful and angry. I am in awe that, despite that, they agreed to find a way forward so this community can start to heal,” said Erin Rogiers, partner at Guerra LLP and another attorney for the families. “Law-enforcement’s inaction that day was a complete and absolute betrayal of these families and the sons, daughters and mothers they lost. TXDPS had the resources, training and firepower to respond appropriately, and they ignored all of it and failed on every level. These families have not only the right but also the responsibility to demand justice, both for their own loss and to prevent other families from suffering the same fate.”

According to the lawsuit filed against 92 individual Texas DPS officers, the officers were trained on Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT), the preeminent active shooter response training in the United States. ALERRT dictates that first responders’ main priority in a situation like Robb Elementary is to, first, stop the killing, then stop the dying, then evacuate the injured. Inherent in these best practices is the prioritization of victims or potential victims over the safety of officers.

Robb Elementary students and teachers were diligently trained to follow their own lockdown protocols during a school shooter event: turn off the lights, lock the door and remain absolutely silent. By design, these protocols trap teachers and students inside, leaving them fully reliant on law enforcement to respond quickly and effectively. The complaint details how the longer law enforcement prolongs a lockdown, the higher the likelihood that students and teachers will be shot, die from their wounds and experience extreme terror and trauma.

Earlier this year, the Department of Justice (DOJ) unveiled a 610-page Critical Incident Review of the law enforcement response to the shooting at Robb Elementary, confirming that failures at every level–including in leadership, decision-making, tactics, policy and training–contributed to officers’ inaction for over an hour. The most significant failure that day, according to the DOJ report, was that law enforcement did not treat the incident as an active shooter situation, despite clear knowledge that there was an active shooter inside, and did not use the available resources and equipment to push forward immediately and continuously to eliminate the threat. Instead, the shooter was able to continue the killing spree for over an hour while helpless families waited anxiously outside the school.

The settlement and lawsuit are on behalf of families and individuals represented by Josh Koskoff, Alinor Sterling, Katie Mesner-Hage and Colin Antaya of Koskoff, Koskoff & Bieder PC and Erin Rogiers of Guerra LLP.  The 17 slain children whose families are plaintiffs in the legal actions taken today are Jacklyn Jaylen Cazares, Amerie Jo Garza, Maite Yuleana Rodriguez, Tess Marie Mata, Annabell Guadalupe Rodriguez, Maranda Gail Mathis, Nevaeh Alyssa Bravo, Jailah Nicole Silguero, Makenna Lee Elrod, Alexandria Aniyah Rubio, Jayce Carmelo Luevanos, Eliahna Amyah Garcia, Jose Manuel Flores, Jr., Rojelio Fernandez Torres, Uziyah Sergio Garcia, Eliahna Torres and Layla Marie Salazar; the families of A.J. Martinez and Miah Isabel Cerrillo, who survived the shooting, are also included.

In addition to the 19 families represented by the legal team that negotiated the settlement and will file the primary lawsuit against TXDPS, a number of attorneys are collaborating with that team, representing additional families and intending to file similar cases in the coming days. Those attorneys include: Jamal Alsaffar and Tom Jacob of National Trial Law, Shreedhar Patel and Charles Soechting of Simon Greenstone Panatier PC, Reynaldo Diaz Accident & Injury Attorneys PC, Lang Law Firm and Law Office of Fidel Rodriguez, Matthews & Forester, Robert Wilson of Thomas J. Henry Injury Attorneys.

The Texas Tribine reported on November 3oth, 2023 a Travis County State District Judge has order the Texas DPS to release law enforcement records related the the May 24, 2022 school tragedy more than a year after numerous news outlets filed a lawsuit to access the records via filed public records requests were blocked.

TEXAS – Texas Senator Roland Gutierrez issued a statement on today’s ruling that the Texas Department of Public Safety must release documents related to the Uvalde massacre, as reported by KXAN.

Press release from the Offices of Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez

Picture by Michael Robinson

“The Texas cover-up on Uvalde must stop. That’s what today’s court ruling means.

“This rogue agency and Governor Abbott cannot keep us in the dark anymore. It is time for these families and the people of Texas to have the justice, transparency, and accountability they deserve.

“I will never forget the screams of grieving parents that day. And I will never forgive Texas officials who withheld even the most basic information from these Uvalde families and the Texans they were sworn to protect and serve.

“The truth is Texas Republicans’ loose gun laws put those kids in danger in the first place and every system meant to keep people safe failed. This was about the neglect of rural Texas, and the cowardice of Texas politicians to stand up to the gun lobby.

“The abject failure on May 24, 2022 is a permanent stain on the State of Texas and the Department of Public Safety. As teachers and little children bled out, leadership failed, communication broke down, and law enforcement cowered before the power of an AR-15 in the hands of a killer. The nation watched in horror, and Governor Greg Abbott and Director Steve McCraw launched a disinformation campaign to cover-up their failures.

“I am grateful to those journalists who have been relentless in uncovering the truth of what happened in this small town. They sought the truth and sued the government for withholding it.”

Roland Gutierrez has served as the Texas State Senator for District 19 since 2021, previously serving six terms as a member of the Texas House of Representatives and two terms as a San Antonio City Councilman.

  A 17-year-old boy claiming to be the cousin of the Uvalde school shooter was arrested and charged with making terroristic threats against an Edgewood ISD school in San Antonio according to a report on Monday, August 7th by News4 San Antonio

Image credit: Edgewood ISD

A News 4 San Antonio Report stated, “According to court documents, the teen’s mother reported that the suspect was planning to ‘do the same thing’ as his cousin.”  “The suspect had made these statements to his sister, who notified their mother, who called the police.”

The report also stated the suspect was on probation and was intoxicated when he was overheard making the threats.

Edgewood ISD is located on the west side of San Antonio.

Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez issued the following statement:

“When this family saw something, they said something. And law enforcement listened and took this threat seriously. Thankfully, a few individuals prevented a disaster. I’m glad the Uvalde community didn’t see another horror play out in Texas. But it shouldn’t take an overheard conversation or luck. Our laws should protect us, not fortune. That is not safety we can count on. Had this young man been just one year older, he would have been able to purchase an AR-15 anywhere in Texas.”

  Uvalde CISD Board Member J.J. Suarez met with over a dozen of the some of the school districts most vocal critics composed of victim family members, and those dissatisfied and angry with Uvalde CISD school board in the wake of May 24th Robb School Tragedy. The meeting was held at a church located on West Main Street east of Walmart where Daniel Meyer is the pastor. The meeting was organized by the group K.A.R.M.A

   The meeting lasted for about an hour and a half and topics included the perceived politics at play with decisions made by Superintendents Hal Harrell and Gary Patterson and Uvalde CISD administration officials regarding Robb School before and after the May 24th tragedy. Additionally   the security measures being implemented were discussed.  Others brought up hiring processes of the district and how the district should do more to recognize the two teachers,  Irma Garcia and Eva Mireles who were among the 19 students who perished as well as provide more assistance to those who were injured on May 24th.

   “It’s been a very tough year,” Suarez said.    Suarez was accompanied by his wife Bethany as difficult topics were covered.

  “There is a perception there is a lot of corruption, whether these is or not; we never go clarification on who got that email,” Adam Martinez said referencing the email sent to Uvalde CISD notifying them that former Uvalde CISD Police Chief Pete Arredondo was appealing his discharge status.

  Emotions often ran high during the Q and A.  Pastor Daniel Meyers when addressing Suarez appeared to be shaking and close to tears as he voiced his frustrations with the school district. Ruben Torrez Jr.,  whose daughter survived the shooting was passionate when presenting his concerns about the importance of the district taking steps to make sure the schools are secure and the chain of command is clear in regards to Uvalde CISD police officer and the DPS officers who will be working with the Uvalde CISD police force.

   Suarez did mention the district plans to start the search process for a permanent Superintendent this fall. “We do have it on the next agenda,” he said.

  One person in attendance stated there needs to be an administration audit conducted within the District.

 “I want to be able to answer these questions, During the open forum we cannot answer questions,” Suarez said referring to the open forum portion of the school board meetings where community members can speak for three minutes,”

  In response to a question posed to Suarez by Jesse Rizo about his decision to give up his TICOLE license, Suarez responded by saying, “No, I am not a commissioned officer. It was hard. It was 27 years of my life,” Suarez said, referring to his decision to end his career as a law enforcement officer.

  At the end, both sides agreed that additional meetings between school board members should be planned allowing for concerned parents and citizens to ask questions and express their concerns without having to abide by the strict school board meeting regulations only limiting public comments to 3 minutes each and not allowing school board members to respond to those comments.

The award will be presented to the state senator from Uvalde for his dedication to the safety of Texas students, educators, and communities.

  AUSTIN, Texas — For his relentless advocacy to improve school safety and end gun violence, Sen. Roland Gutierrez will receive an Acts of Courage Award from Texas AFT at the union’s 31st biennial convention in McAllen. The award will be presented today, June 23, at 2 PM.

Over the course of this past legislative session and well before its start, Gutierrez has worked tirelessly to advocate on behalf of Uvalde families, whose children and teachers were slain in the Robb Elementary Massacre on May 24, 2022. Gutierrez has never let politicians in Austin forget about the need to make smart investments in our schools, reject private school voucher schemes, and promote common sense legislation to keep Texans safe. And his efforts have not gone unnoticed, which is why Texas AFT is proud to recognize his service.

“When teachers and our schools were getting a raw deal on the budget, on private school vouchers, and on the danger facing our communities by horrific gun violence, Sen. Roland Gutierrez refused to stay silent,” said Texas AFT President Zeph Capo. “I am grateful that Sen. Gutierrez came into the Texas Capitol with a mission to speak truth and do right by teachers and students. This state would be a much better place to live, learn, and thrive if we had more leaders in elected office like him.”

“Our educators are the backbone of our public neighborhood schools, shaping the minds and futures of our children. They deserve safe and supportive working environments that enable them to thrive and deliver the best education possible. It is sick and twisted that we have the largest budget surplus in Texas history and this Legislature didn’t do a damn thing to keep our kids safe, increase teacher pay, and secure the investment our neighborhood schools deserve,” said Texas Sen. Roland Gutierrez. “I am humbled to be recognized by Texas AFT. They have worked tirelessly to secure the future of our state and wake up lawmakers to respect the concerns of our teachers. I am forever proud to stand in solidarity with the good people of Texas AFT.”

The Uvalde Downtown Plaza is filled with visitors and the media

One year ago at 11:43 AM Robb Elementary School was under siege. One year later,  a group of Catholic priests are joined with others praying around the Robb Elementary School site. With television satellite trucks parked at nearby residences and on the side of streets near Robb School, the world’s attention is once again on Uvalde.  One year ago shortly before noon, the clock was ticking marking the time of the infamous 77 minutes. Television trucks had not arrived yet.

  One year ago, the chopping sounds of helicopter rotor blades filled the air.  Today, a lone helicopter could be heard flying overhead.

  One year ago, today, Uvalde CISD Superintendent Hal Harrell was seen near the police lines on Old Carrizo Road.  Today, around noon, Uvalde CISD Superintendent Gary Patterson stands on the corner of the Robb Elementary School sign at Geraldine Street and Old Carrizo Road

One year ago today at noon the clock was still marking the infamous 77 minutes. Today, a group standing in solidarity with Surviving teacher Arnulfo Arnie Reyes stood holding orange flags on the corner of Highway 9o and Highway 83 standing on the edge of the town square downtown Uvalde marking he 77 minutes that elapsed last year.

 One year ago today, information about what was happening was incomplete. Misinformation spread on social media.  Today, the reality of 19 children and two teachers is well known, Their names are known around the world.

One year ago today at 9 AM, if you asked anyone in the United States to name a city or town in Texas, big cities like Dallas, Austin, San Antonio or Houston might come to mind. At the end of the day one year ago, much of the world would learn about Uvalde.

After May 24th, 2022, Uvalde was irrevocably changed.

There are still questions left to be answered. Hearts were shattered,

A year later, the town mourns, reflects and prays today. The town is on the long journey of restoration and healing.

Report By Jennifer Gilliland- At approximately noon today several UCISD students participated in a walk out. The event was organized by a group of high school students determined to make changes regarding gun laws as well as more safety measures in our school. The students ‘walked from the high school, junior high, and Uvalde Elementary down Getty to the Plaza where they peacefully protested till 5 PM then walked to Robb.

 Report by Michael Robinson: The Uvalde CISD School District sent out a statement to parents early Wednesday morning setting the rules and parameters for allowing students to participate in the larger National Student Walkout Protesting Gun Violence.

  According to the statement, the district would allow for its students to demonstrate outside within the confines of the school grounds from Noon to 1 PM. At noon,however,  the students started walking off the Morales Jr. High and Uvalde High School campuses and eventually climbed over fences and through the Uvalde High School Tennis court area to take their signs and actually walk beyond school grounds. About 75 to 100 students marched from the campuses towards the Uvalde Downtown area where they assembled on the Uvalde Downtown Plaza at 1 PM.

  School District Police Chief Josh Gutierrez and another Uvalde CID Resource officer followed the students. According to Diana Olvedo-Karau who spoke with Gutierrez. She was told by Gutierrez that he followed the students to ensure their safety off campus.

JPPI was never engaged, nor was a contract or payment completed between the district and JPPI.

Uvalde CISD released a statement Friday morning, February 10th, on recent decisions made by the board regarding suspending its search for a new school superintendent and also the decision not to pursue and investigation the district’s police department with JPPI. Last week, the Uvalde Hesperian reached out to JPPI for a comment which the firm declined.

The following statement was issued by Uvalde CISD:

“Superintendent Search Temporarily Suspended
At our Uvalde CISD’s Board Meeting on Monday Night, February 6th, the Board of Trustees voted to temporarily suspend the Superintendent Search, believing a change in leadership with a new transition is not in the district’s best interest at this point. Extending Mr. Patterson’s time with the district will provide continuity and stability in leadership. Mr. Patterson will continue in the Interim Superintendent role until a date to be determined.

JPPI Investigation
The district’s participation with JPPI was mentioned as a possible option for an investigation. JPPI was never engaged, nor was a contract or payment completed between the district and JPPI. The district decided to move forward with the Texas Police Chiefs Association in the investigation of the UCISD Police Department.

The district has received the following investigative reports, audits, and reviews.

Texas House of Representatives: Investigative Committee on the Robb Elementary Shooting

The systematic review and investigation of the UCISD Police Department conducted by James McGlaughlin with the Texas Police Chiefs Association

Texas School Safety Center: Uvalde CISD District Safety and Security Audit Report

The Department of Justice’s ongoing investigative review will be completed at a date to be determined.

The district has received a systematic review of the UCISD Police Department conducted by James McGlaughlin of the Texas Police Chiefs Association. The administration and Board of Trustees are currently reviewing this document. In addition, the district is actively participating and cooperating with the DOJ investigation and review.”
