Silver Bells- Song by Andy Williams

Silver bells, silver bells
It’s Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, hear them ring
Soon it will be Christmas Day

As shoppers enter the Uvalde Walmart are greeted by a Salvation Army volunteer ringing a small hand-held bell. Earlier this morning, the Uvalde Hesperian stopped to visit with Mendell Morgan, a Salvation Army volunteer, wearing a Santa Hat, and a Christmas light necklace.

Morgan kept the bell ringing while several people in a few minutes stopped to put some pocket change and others folded bills into the kettle. There was a bit of Christmas joy radiated from each as well as a smile on each face.

Emily Gonzales, a Salvation Army organizer and volunteer, was stationed at the opposite western Wal-Mart entrance near her kettle.

Mendell stated that every cent collected stays local and helps local people with food assistance, rent and utility assistance, transportation assistance, prescription drug assistance and other needs.

Morgan also said volunteer kettle bell ringers are still needed and shifts are available each day before Christmas.

The sound of the Salvation Army bell ringing will be filling the air once again in Uvalde this weekend and next weekend in front of the Uvalde Walmart Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Bell Ringers are needed to volunteer for shifts according to Mendell Morgan the treasurer of the Uvalde Salvation Army Unit.

“We are once again putting the Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign on in Uvalde.   We need bell ringers to cover shifts from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday this week and next,” Morgan said.

He went on to say they may have enough volunteers  but next weekend right before Christmas there is a need for bell ringers.

According to Morgan, the Salvation Army brought a truck to Uvalde immediately following the Robb School Tragedy on May 24th, 2024 and provided free hot meals and all sorts of assistance to our hurting community for weeks. “I know what they do what they say they will do,” he said.

” And, ALL of the money donated here stays here.  I personally empty the kettles, deposit the proceeds to our fee-free account at the First State Bank and, as Treasurer, write the checks to cover bills people are having trouble paying (these are checks to the company or individual owed such as utilities, rent, medical bills) based on the applications submitted to me,” Morgan said.

” People are donating, even today, but we need a much more robust response,” he said.

Appeal to make up donation loss due to threat

The following was submitted by El Progreso Memorial Library Director Mendell Morgan

The traditional Salvation Army Red Kett]e Campaign for 2022 has ended in Uvalde.

Last summer, over $14,000 was given out in checks of $250 each or less to help Uvaldeans with rent, food, utilities and other essential assistance for expenses of those in crisis.  The money was largely collected from earlier Red Kettle Campaigns to which local people gave to help their local neighbors in need.

Again this year, most of the bell ringers were students from Uvalde High School who came with their faculty sponsors.  They have done a great job with their enthusiasm and even dressing as the Grinch!  About 3:10 p.m. on Saturday, one faculty sponsor called to say his students had gone home and he wanted to know how to get the kettles back as he needed to leave.  Mendell Morgan, Treasurer, for Uvalde Salvation Army, was surprised that the shift ended early, and then stunned to get the following text message from the teacher:

“Also sir just wanted to let you know that a man told us ’you should be shot for what you are doing’ and proceeded to make a gun sign with his hand and mock shoot me and my students.  It was reported to police.”  He went on to identify this man as maybe in his early 60’s, Caucasian and in a motorized wheelchair.  He is slender with a full beard.  This real Grinch was driving an older model silver colored Lincoln four-door sedan outfitted to tow a trailer, with handicapped Missouri license plate JN 48X.

This man has effectively stopped our efforts to raise needed money in the busiest and most productive giving time in the week before Christmas.  As such, we are issuing an appeal to those who would like to help make these donations up with a gift to provide funds for those in need through the Salvation Army assistance program.  Gifts may be made by checks sent to the Salvation Army in care of Mendell Morgan at El Progreso Memorial Library,301 West Main Street in Uvalde, Texas 78801.

Cash gifts may also be brought to the library.   Gifts may be made and designated through CashApp on the library website and direct at the QR Code (in attachment below):
