Over 450 laced up their running shoes and braved the cold and rainy weather Saturday morning to participate in the Eva Strong Memorial Run.  Eva Mireles was one of the two Robb Elementary School teachers who perished in the May 24th tragedy.  Family members of Eva Mireles organized the event.

“Mireles was in her 17th year of teaching in the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District and held certifications in special education and bilingual education.

A post from Crossfit.com stated, In addition to regularly running before school, she also enjoyed hiking, and friends and relatives recall she could be found in her CrossFit gym almost every day after school. Earlier this year, she participated in the CrossFit Open for the ninth time.”

Weekend rain results in water level rise on the Frio River

A weekend cold weather system brought this year’s spring break week to a wintery close. Overnight Friday March 17 through early Saturday morning March 18th light snowfall was reported in Rocksprings and in Leakey according to the National Weather Service Office Austin/San Antonio. “We’ve had several reports of snow accumulating on grassy surfaces and on vehicles over the Edwards Plateau and western Hill Country,” the NWS Austin/San Antonio said.  Rain reports from several measuring stations in Uvalde County indicated about 1/2 inch of rain Saturday at several locations in Uvalde County.

Saturday’s temperatures were in the mid 50’s accompanied by light rain most of that day. Up in Concan, the spring breakers put away their swimsuits and river gear and could be seen wearing coats and jackets. While Thursday’s warmer temperatures and sunshine allowed for some to have some river fun, the warmer temperatures did not last.

“Showers will continue this morning, but will mainly limited to the western portion of the area by mid-afternoon. Temperatures will be a few degrees colder than yesterday with overcast skies. These colder temperatures linger into early this upcoming week,” the NWS San Antonio office posted on Twitter last Saturday morning.

The colder temperatures and rainy weather did not deter runners from participating in the Eva Strong Memorial Race held in Uvalde that morning with approximately 450 participating.  The Race was held in memory of Eva Mireles, one of two teachers who perished in the Robb School massacre on May 24th, last year.

Tournament golfers hit the links Saturday morning at Frio Valley Ranch Golf course completing the second tournament day.

300 Mile 3 Day Relay Run to support efforts of The Uvalde Foundation For Kids To Address Ongoing Mental Health Trauma Care

On January 6-8 2023, Run For Their Lives, a relay team this year (5 runners) will be stepping off at 0600 from VFW Post 8790 Houston, TX to City of Uvalde Town Square in Uvalde, TX to raise PTSD Awareness. Each runner will run 10 miles before the next runner continues on the 3oo mile trek

Run For Their Lives Relay Team will run 300+ miles placing a flag every MILE along I-10. We will honor a veteran/1st responders who lost their lives due to PTSD, honoring those veterans struggling with PTSD/mental health as well as honoring those lives lost due to Uvalde school shooting. Why? Because those families are still suffering from a traumatic event, which could cause PTSD or mental health issue. We want those families to know they are not forgotten and we will honor them. This year Run For Their Lives will fundraise funds to donate to The Uvalde Foundation For Kids. ALL DONATIONS will go to this organization.

Who is The Uvalde Foundation For Kids? It is an organization that focuses efforts to end violence against our students & school communities. You might be asking how is this connected to “mental health.” Per founder of The Uvalde Foundation For Kids… “As you are very aware addressing issues of individual Mental Health is CRITICAL in Effectively Curbing Violence; whether they be direct acts of violence against students on school campuses, or the internal, Mental violent “aftereffects,” as we refer to it as. In military terms or other traumatic events, it is often referred to as PTSD. This, again you know, is NOT selective to only Military. Many students we work with, including families from the May UVALDE School Shooting, deal with the ongoing trauma inflicted that Fateful Day.”

“Our ongoing emergency Aide fund is specifically set up to assist families & those effected by violence, not simply in Uvalde, but across the nation; in being able to cover expenses for counseling, travel to medical facilities & followup care, for example.”

This fundraising efforts would help in that ongoing endeavor. Additionally through their 24 hour crisis line, trauma victims are able to connect for crisis support whether through peer to peer mentoring or professional counseling selected from any number of our National partners.

Please consider making a pledge per mile donation or a flat donation to this organization. After the run, the team will present the organization with a check.

NEVER ALONE! Always with you! I can, you can, we can!
