A  14-foot-tall steel cross was transported from Indian Creek Ranch in North Texas to Uvalde and arrived around midday today. The cross was built by Michael Collins,  a father who heard the news about the horrific Robb School shooting in Uvalde  and knew he needed to do something for Uvalde. He decided to build a special cross for Uvalde with the names of the students and teachers who perished etched on it. Michael Collins, along with his son, Michael  with volunteers from Operation Texas Strong traveled Mineral Wells in  North Texas to Uvalde, Texas arrived around midday today on Saturday, June 18th, 2022 to its permanent home on the property of Ace Bail Bond Company located at 1200 West Main Street in Uvalde.

Picture from Operation Texas Strong Facebook Page

The effort was a labor of love for Michael Collins and required a lot of work and money to complete it. At the start, Collins spent his own money for the materials in the beginning while his son. Michael Collins, Jr. started a Go Fund Me Page for the project.

On the Go Fund Me page it reads: “As many of you know, my dad built a steel cross for my brother after being killed in a car accident. Dad also created a second cross for Miss Glenda, a family friend and one of my brother’s most prominent supporters in his recovery.

"  My Dad has felt the calling to build a cross memorial for the victims of the Uvalde school shooting. My dad has a huge heart, and if he could foot the bill himself, he wouldn’t accept a single penny. But, unfortunately, a fixed income doesn’t allow him that option, so we’re reaching out to family and friends for whatever you feel led to give.

Materials are sky-high right now, as many of you know. The money will be used to build and set up the cross. We’re working on finding a proper location in Uvalde right now as well. If there is money after, it will be donated to the victims’ families.

We’re also open to materials and supplies as well! So let us know if you have something that will come in handy.”

In an interview today, Michael Collins said in addition to donations being received for the project, donors also supplied materials used to create the Cross.

At 2:00 PM today, a small crowd assembled on Martinez Street which is the side of the Ace Bail Bond property where the cross was installed. A big hoist lifted the cross from the flatbed trailer to the location it was cemented into the ground.

Some family members of the 19 Robb School students were in attendance for the Cross installation.

Kids “Horse around” during Uvalde library’s Story Time

Story time is a weekly event held at El Progreso Memorial Library on Wednesday mornings. It is not unusual for guest readers from the community to come read to the children attending.

When the Covid-19 Pandemic caused many in-person activities to cancel and go online during 2020 and some of 2021, the library staff took their story time online too where children could attend story time virtually.

After the Robb School Shooting rocked the town and left the entire community in grief and shock,  El Progreso Memorial Library and its Wednesday Morning Story Time have adapted over the last two weeks. Last Wednesday, the library  was filled with many artists and activities for area children and families to enjoy. While those artistic volunteers have returned home. an multi-colored “Uvalde Strong” chalk art rendering still remains.

This week over one hundred children and parents attended this weeks story time.

“We think there were about 120 in attendance.  There were about 7 volunteers who came with 501C3 Miniwonders Equine Therapy of Georgetown, Texas, organization.  They brought a petting bunny, Moxie, and a large amount of soccer balls and Squishmallows plush comfort pillows.  All of the gifts and expenses of this trip were covered by donations made in the area of Georgetown to their organization.  They were very gracious, and the children loved petting the miniature horses.  Yes:  the horses were walking about to meet the children inside the library and there were no mishaps!  It was a truly wonderful event.” Library Director Mendell Morgan said.

Was Uvalde CISD Chief of Police Pete Arredondo the officer in charge at the Robb Elementary School Massacre?

Four days after the Uvalde Robb Elementary School Massacre and this question remains: Who was the officer in charge on the scene during the late morning school shooting attack was happening and gunman Salvador Ramos was inside a school classroom murdering children and their teachers?

Many news outlets including CNN.com , The New York Times and numerous other news outlets have assumed the officer in command was Uvalde CISD Chief of Police Pete Arredondo. In a news conference held on Friday May 27th, 2022, Col, Steven McCraw, Texas Department of Public Safety Director didn’t mention the officer’s name.  But he said he made the “wrong decision” to not engage the gunman sooner.

In addition to officers from Uvalde CISD there were officers on the scene of other law enforcement agencies including the Uvalde County Sheriff’s Office,  US Border Patrol were assisting and apparently taking orders from one individual officer who has yet to be officially named by Uvalde Chief of Police Daniel Rodriguez, Texas DPS Public Safety Director McCraw, Uvalde CISD administration, or by Mayor Don McLaughlin or even by Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

After several days have passed with a news briefing by attended by Uvalde CISD Superintendent Hal Harrell and at least two press conferences where Texas Governor Greg Abbott spoke flanked by many state and local elected officials and two press conferences conducted by Texas DPS,  no one has come out and named the officer giving the orders directing the response.

A Uvalde City Council election was held on Saturday, May 7th and For City of Uvalde Council Member, District 3, Pedro “Pete” Arredondo received a total of 126 votes or 69.23% winning a seat on the town council.

In the press conference, held Friday, May 27th, Governor Greg Abbott said, “As everybody has learned, the information that I was given turned out, in part, to be inaccurate. And I’m absolutely livid about that,” said Texas Governor Greg Abbott in a press conference Friday

The question of who was in charge of making the decisions that could have ultimately saved the lives of some of the 19 children who were killed or perhaps the 2 teachers is a critical question that is relevant to the story of what happened that day.

When the name of this person will be officially verified is unknown. The question of why so many officials have so far kept this information a secret is also unknown/

Fresh water and seed attract the birds

Many people post a variety of content on their personal Facebook pages, but Bob Shackleford posts the many varieties of birds that come to visit his bird bath and bird feeder and the colors of these birds are stunning.

“I’ve been a birder for most of my life, but really got into it after retiring about 12 years ago. I love photography, so it seemed natural to combine the two. Uvalde is a fantastic birding destination and I meet birders from all over the nation who come here to enjoy our variety of birds.” Shackleford said.

“ Right now I’m taking most of my pictures here at my place south of town. I am getting out and finding some birds, but it’s awfully hot. I feed a variety of feed.

For the Buntings, I am feeding Millet right now. I also feed Sunflower seed, whole corn, Peanut Butter suet cakes, homemade bark butter and a wild bird mix.   Right now, my biggest draw is water. Birds are thirsty and hot and stay busy at my bird baths and water troughs.” he said.
