A cold war era F-16 warbird found an unusual place to cool its proverbial jets from a trip between two air force bases. The jet is being transported from Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls to Laughlin Air Force Base near Del Rio. The jet is taking a pit stop on the Uvalde’s Tex-Best parking lot until Saturday when it will resume its journey to Laughlin Air Force Base.

Pictures of the military war bird have been recently popping up on local social media pages.

Also, a number of curious local residents have stopped to get pictures including one woman who wanted a picture of herself with the plane.

The Uvalde Hesperian visited with Logistics Coordinator Andrew Scott, with Wild Companies, Inc, who has been contracted to move the F16 between the two locations and is managing the aircraft on the journey. Andrew’s stepdad is one of the owners of the company.

According to Scott, the F-16 is not air worthy but will be used by the Laughlin Air Force Base for on the ground pilot training.

“We moved an A10 about a month ago and we parked it at a construction yard somewhere.” Scott said.

” We move a lot of these aircraft.” Scott said.

According to a Wikipedia article on the F-16 Fighting Falcon, “The General Dynamics (now Lockheed MartinF-16 Fighting Falcon is an American single-engine supersonic multirole fourth-generation fighter aircraft developed by General Dynamics and produced by multiple companies, including General Dynamics until 1993 and Lockheed Martin until 2017.[3] ”

“Since entering service in 1978, the F-16 Fighting Falcon has become one of NATO’s most popular fighters,” an article from defenseandaviation.info said.

The article also adds, “Much of that popularity came from the film “Iron Eagle” (1986), in which a young aviator flew in an F-16 to a country fictitious (but very similar to Gaddafi’s Libya) to rescue his father.”

According to information on www.govtribe.com it states: “Wild Companies, Inc. is a veteran-owned, for-profit small business headquartered in LaGrange, Georgia, that has been registered with SAM.gov since August 2021. The company specializes in providing specialized logistics, transportation, and relocation services to federal agencies, with a particular focus on complex, high-value equipment and infrastructure projects. Wild Companies demonstrates expertise in managing time-sensitive, technically demanding operations that require specialized handling, compliance with security protocols, and skilled labor across multiple federal agencies.”

The US Dept. of the Air Force (DAF) put out an ad in 830 Times inviting the public in the area to participate in a a public scooping on the environmental impact of the T7 A Red Hawk aircraft.

The US Dept. of the Air Force (DAF)recently placed an ad in the  830 Times inviting the public in the area to participate in a a public scooping on the environmental impact of the T7 A Red Hawk aircraft.

A concerned citizen reached out to the Uvalde Hesperian and said the following:

“The USDAF wants to start a T-7A flight training training program at Laughlin and other area air force bases (SA) and aerospace partners, that might include our very own airport since we already do training partnerships with them. As per the USDAF, the T-7A is inherently louder than the current T-38C, it has higher emissions, and there might be more sleep (since they are going to do nighttime operations) and school disturbances. “

What Is Being Proposed?

Recapitalization entails:

  • Introduction of T-7A Red Hawk aircraft and flight operations at Laughlin AFB and associated airspace to replace all T‑38C Talon aircraft assigned to the installation.
  • Introduction of nighttime (between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.) T-7A flight operations.
  • Changes to the number of personnel and dependents in the Laughlin AFB region.  Specifically, Laughlin AFB and surrounding region would experience a 190 staff and 361 dependent increase during the aircraft transition period of 2030 and 2031 and a 60 staff and 114 dependent decrease (relative to current personnel levels) after 2031.
  • Construction and upgrade of support and maintenance facilities.  Specifically, six military construction and six facility sustainment, restoration, and modernization projects would be undertaken.  These projects include construction at Laughlin AFB of a new Ground Based Training System Facility, Unit Maintenance Trainer Facility, and hush house; addition to the Egress Shop; and 48 T-7A shelters.

Welcome to the U.S. Air Force’s homepage for the T-7A recapitalization program! T-7A rec

Capitalization is the acquisition of new generation T-7A aircraft and construction and upgrade of specific facilities to support the pilot training and operations and maintenance of the T‑7A aircraft.”

On the official website it states the following:

T-7A recapitalization is expected to occur at five military installations in the south-central United States over the coming decade.

Additionally, on this Laughlin AFB website it reads:

This website is the U.S. Air Force’s homepage for the public to learn about and become involved in the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process for each installation. A seperate website is established for each installation when its NEPA process commences. The U.S. Air Force encourages the public and interested parties to review the information and documents provided on these websites and participate in the NEPA processes.

The Air Force is holding a remote public scoping meeting on February 8, 2023.  The meeting will open at 5:30 p.m. Central Time with the Air Force giving a brief presentation about the proposal.  Following the presentation, the Air Force will answer relevant questions from the public and instruct the public on how to submit comments.  The remote public scoping meeting will end no later than 8:00 p.m.
