What’s something you can do on the first day of the New Year that will provide fresh air and a little adventure? How about…take a hike?
Garner State Park and Lost Maples State Natural Areas are both offering scenic hikes on the first day of 2026.
Texas Parks and Wildlife offers many other 1st Day hikes at other State Parks.
According to the Texas State Park Website, it says, First Day Hikes vary from short, leisurely nature walks on forested trails, boardwalk strolls through wetlands or to the beach, or climbs into the mountains of the Chihuahuan Desert. Some First Day Hikes aren’t hikes at all: We also lead bike ridespaddling tours, and maybe even horseback rides! Choose the event that’s right for you.

We offer both guided and self-guided hikes. If you choose a self-guided hike, be sure to look for tables or stop at headquarters for hike information and maps. After your hike, stop back by to report on your hike and collect a memento of your visit.

See a list of First Day Hikes.

Uvalde County resident Jason Munoz reported to the Uvalde Hesperian he saw a strange object in the night sky in the evening of Monday, April 21st over Garner State Park and is still not sure what it was.

Munoz who lives just behind Old Baldy cliff on CR 350 took pictures of the cloudy object that appeared to make strange movements in the sky,” he said.  He also took pictures of the anomaly from 9:29 PM to 9:31 PM and went on to say traveled right over his house.

The Uvalde Hesperian researched possible explanations for the object including a phenomenon from a SpaceX launch to a fireball meteor explosion emanating from the Lyrid Meteor Shower.

The 2025 Lyrid meteor shower is expected to peak overnight Monday, April 21, into the morning of Tuesday, April 22, according to NASA.During the Lyrids‘ peak, 10 to 20 fast and bright meteors can be seen per hour, according to NASA. Local forecasts will include detailed information on how clear the night sky will be in various locations.

Rope swings on the banks of the Frio River result in numerous injuries

Article by Michael Robinson ; Picture Credit: Robinson

(Picture is from Utopia Park near the Sabinal River)

Many people like to “Swing into Summer ” by swinging off a rope attached to a tall Cypress Tree on the banks of the Frio River. Others can be seen diving off cliffs facing the Frio River opposite the side of Garner State Park according to Garner State Park Superintendent Kelby Bridwell.  According to Bridwell, these two activities result in many injuries involving broken bones as well as back, and neck injuries resulting from people diving into shallow water or hanging on to the rope too long swinging back into the Cypress Trees or falling too close to the shoreline into shallow water.

According to Bridwell, GSP personnel routinely cut rope swings on the river banks on the GSP park side of the river.  However, there are two to three rope swings located on private property on the opposite side of GSP.

Bridwell said a single rope swing can be swung on up to 10,000 times a day.

He went on to say that park staff often helps in rescue efforts of people in the Frio River.

Over this past weekend, an off duty U.S. Border Patrol officer was involved in a private party incident on the Frio River on the private property side of the river. The incident is still being investigated by law enforcement and the condition of the officer is not known at this time.
