A fire occurring on Thursday morning, May 29th at the Hangar 6 Air Cafe located at 249 Airport Road next to the Uvalde Flight Center has resulted in the restaurant’s closure. Southwest Texas College Police Chief Jimmy Calliham told the Hesperian the fire is suspected to have started in the kitchen area. He said he was first in the scene and observed smoke.

Skyway Entertainment President Mark Espinoza released a press statement a few hours after the incident.

In the release Espinoza said, ” It is with a heavy heart that we announce a structure fire has occurred at Hangar 6 Air Cafe. This incident has profoundly impacted our SkyWay Entertainment family, and our thoughts are with everyone affected during this difficult time.

We want to extend our deepest gratitude to the Uvalde Volunteer Fire Department (UVFD), Southwest Texas College Police, and Uvalde Police Department for their swift and courageous response. Their dedication and professionalism were instrumental in managing this emergency and ensuring the safety of our community.

The safety and well-being of our community and team members remain our top priority. Out of an abundance of caution, Hangar 6 Air Cafe will be closed indefinitely until further notice as we assess the situation and begin recovery efforts.

While this is a challenging moment for all of us, we want to affirm our unwavering commitment to rebuilding. Hangar 6 Air Cafe will come back stronger and better than ever, and we look forward to welcoming back our valued patrons and community once again. We encourage everyone to continue supporting us by visiting our other brands, including Broadway 830, The Local Fix, and Smoothie King.

We sincerely thank our community for your continued support, prayers, and encouragement during this time. Please stay tuned for further updates as we navigate the path to recovery.”

SWTC President Hector Gonzales makes the case for council to approve renewing the city’s hangar lease to the college.

by Michael Robinson | Uvalde Hesperian

September 11th, 2024

After a sometimes tense discussions regarding the decision to renew the lease with Southwest Texas College’s for a city owned hangar located at Garner Field, the Uvalde City Council voted to approve renewing the 10 year contract with Southwest Texas College as long as specific wording in the contract be contingent on the Federal Aviation Administration approves the school’s aviation program as acceptable  per stipulations for the multi-million dollar grant the federal agency provides to the City of Uvalde for Garner Field.

City Council members and several citizens spoke on the matter as well as SWTC’s President Hector Gonzales before the final vote was cast by the Uvalde City Council.

The issue: SWTC’s previous 30 year lease with the City for the hangar is set to expire September 30th of this month. In a previous city council meeting on August 13th the Uvalde City Council tabled the decision which was taken up again at the Tuesday, September 10th meeting.  The City of Uvalde just received a 10 million dollar grant from TXDot Aviation to go towards maintaining the City-owned Garner Field Airport.

Uvalde City Councilman Ernest “Chip” King claims that in order to remain qualified for the FAA Grant money, all hangars on Garner Field be used exclusively for aviation purposes. SWTC had used the hanger for the college’s Wildlife Education Program prior to the hanger being repurposed for its aviation mechanics program.

“I want this program to succeed. It’s very difficult. It’s a very difficult decision we’re having up here. We got TxDot Aviation, we’ve got us over here trying to decide, and regulations and grant opportunities and everything mumble jumbled over here. Do we do the right thing for the students? Do we do the right thing for the City? What is the right thing?” Mayor Pro-tem Everardo “Lalo” Zamora said.

Councilman Earnest “Chip” King said. “FAA Order 51,90.6B says you have to have an aeronautical use for the hanger. Classrooms is not an…I’m all for the college. We have a list of people that want hanger space at this airport. We have had people build hangers on this airport because there is no hanger space for them. FAA order 5190.6B in the FAA policy states that if you have anybody that wants a hangar and you have a  non-aeronautical use of a hangar or facility on there, you have to move them out and you risk getting the AIP funds. AIP funds come from the federal government.”

King continued stating the city is getting ready to do a 5.2 million dollar ramp project funded by federal government funds with a 10% match. King went on to suggest the college is to get a waiver from the FAA and then rent from month to month.

Southwest Texas College President Hector Gonzales said. “I would believe if you look across to the west side of the airstrip and we’re splitting hairs as to what is aeronautical and what is not because there is several repair shops that are somehow  aeronautical because there are several repair shops that are aeronautical but the training for folks that work on those airplanes is not aeronautical. He went on to say other cities in the area have A&P schools and even an airframe school located at their respective airports.”

Gonzales continued saying, “Councilman King you just said the City received 5.2 million dollars in TXDot Aviation. Our aviation maintenance program had been there and it did not jeopardize one penny of the 5.2 million dollars that came to the city. You are getting another $100 tonight  that did not jeopardize you are accepting tonight.”

“The problem here is because we make it a problem.” Gonzales said.

King responded to say that if someone called and notified the FAA it could jeopardize the 5.2 million dollars the city has already received.

SWTC Board Member Rojelio Muñoz addressed the council as a former city councilman: “I remember several years back this issue coming up and I suspect that perhaps these concerns have been exaggerated.Because In the several years this was quote, an issue, it hasn’t jeopardize any funding. President Gonzales provided me with a letter sent by the college in February 2022 where they told the college all you need to do is have an FAA approved education program up and running and you’d be good.  That happened. The college complied with that.”

August 20th, 2024

The gliders stayed out later than in previous days. When they did head in for a landing after 6 PM, they came in thick and fast.

Several locals showed up to view the gliders approaching the runway at Garner Field for a landing.  A local person named Mary B. (She requested her first name and last initial be used only) she was thrilled to see the gliders make their landing approaches. She asked if the Hesperian could take a picture of her with a glider in the background.

While out in the small field across from the runway at the intersection of Ham Lane and Garner Field Road, I met a very knowledgeable man from South Africa who had connections to the Jonker Sailplanes

Following the landings, I headed over to the back field where the pilot and their teams were making final e

The Uvalde Hesperian spoke to a non-participating glider pilot who provided information about the course and competition below.

(08-18-2024)

Sail planes were lined up in their competitive queues waiting for tow planes to give them a lift up into the sky to start their course for the first day of 38th FAI World Soaring Championships in Uvalde.

A couple of dozen people sat near the west end of the runway to watch the gliders take flight to an altitude of 2ooo feet from where they would each find the nearest thermal to lift their respective planes to higher altitudes to start their course which consists of cones or waypoints each much fly through before heading to the second cone.

Gliders will be flying a designated course scored not for speed but for reaching each of the cone markers at an optimum time.

After all the sailplanes took to the skies, spectators looked for the glints off the gliders as they ascended on a thermal.

A number of large dust devils could be seen spinning into respective thermals on either side of the runways.

The gliders will return to land from the north of Garner Fields between 5 PM and 6:30 PM.

One of the best places to view the gliders coming in for a landing is on Garner Field road near the convenience store.

With the Southwest Texas College 30-year lease of a City owned hangar located at Garner Field set to expire on September 30th, 2024, SWTC President Dr. Hector Gozales spoke on behalf of the agenda before the Council requesting  a new hangar lease, the council voted to table the request to allow members of the City Council to tour the Colleges’ Aviation program facility in Del Rio and allow for Gonzales to provide curriculum details.

In a letter Gonzales sent to the City of Uvalde Airport Manager Joe Cardenas, it stated: “We are requesting that the City renew the lease for a term of 10 years with two 5- year options to extend. The hangar is home for our Aviation Maintenance program, and we have students enrolled for the Fall 2024 semester which begins on August 26, 2024. Our long-term plan is to expand the current hangar to accommodate the Aviation Power Plant portion of our A & P curriculum.”

Gonzales believes that providing aviation technology education and training as part of the SWTC curriculum in Uvalde would give students a marketable career skill that provides good pay.  According to Gonzales, the College has invested in Castroville, Del Rio and Hondo referring to its aviation technology educational programs.

“My Philosophy from day one is a partnership,” Gonzales said.

City Councilmember Hector Luevano said, “I think we need to afford them the opportunity. Education is a big plus for our community.”

Not everyone on the council was in favor of granting the hangar space to the College City Councilmember Chip King said there is a high demand for hangar space at Garner Field.

“Uvalde is notorious for no hangar space.” King said.

King was also concerned that if the city provides a new lease to the college, the hangar’s use could jeopardize the 5.2 million dollars of funding the city receives from the Federal Government to maintain and operate Garner Field referring to classrooms inside the hangar.  According to Cardenas, the existing classrooms would have to move out of the hangar.

Gonzales informed the council members the hanger is needed for load moving and aircraft taxiing.

While Gonzales informed the Council that he spoke with Van Fleet, who oversees the federal funding, and he was told the college’s aviation program at the hanger would be in compliance.

King responded and said, “…but the next guy says no.”

“We need partnership. If this program as/is qualifies as aviation related.” Gonzales said.

City Council Mayor Pro Tem Everardo “Lalo” Zamora said, “I want a curriculum. I want to tour that facility.”

(August 14th, 2024) Today marks the first day of the 38th FAI World Gliding Championship   which will continue through August 31st. According to Wolfgang Janowitsch from Austria approximately 50 sailplanes took to the skies today.

The Uvalde Hesperian visited with Janowitsch’s team earlier this afternoon as they were wrapping up their day at Garner Field, When asked if this was his first time visiting Uvalde, he said that he came to Uvalde for the World Gliding Event in 2012.

According to the official website, it states:

This world-class event is organized by the Soaring Society of America, under the auspices of the National Aeronautics Association of the USA, at the direction of the FAI Gliding Commission (IGC) as hosted by the Uvalde Soaring Association. Soaring pilots in the Open, 18 meter, and Multi-seat classes from over thirty countries will compete for the coveted title of World Champion at this event. Uvalde is famous for its Texas-sized hospitality and some of the best soaring conditions possible.

World Gliding Championships (WGC) are the highest expression of the sport, with the best sailplane pilots worldwide coming together to determine a champion in each of the three classes. Championships typically last ten to twelve days, with courses of 100 to 400 miles (160 to 600 km) set each day the weather is suitable. Uvalde has hosted two World Championships, the first in 1991 and another in 2012.

We will have a Parade and Olympic style ceremony Saturday the 17th at the Honeybowl and the closing ceremonies at the airport on Saturday the 31st. The public is welcome at the Soaring AeroPlaza at the end of Howard Langford Drive.”

The Saturday, August 17th Parade is set to begin at 10 AM. According to information obtained from Uvalde City Councilman Chip King, the parade starts at Mesquite street at Getty and goes to the Amphitheater at the park.

The real time flight tracking map on www.weglide.org shows ther positions of the various gliders in flight

By Michael Robinson | Uvalde Hesperian ; Photos by Robinson

It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere as the Jimmy Buffett classic says and 5 O’Clock hour was the time when the glider pilots competing in the USA 18 Meter Nationals and Uvalde Glide would be completing the day’s flight and start making their approach to Garner Field for a landing.  At 4:53 PM the We Glide real time flight tracking map showed most of the gliders northwest of Uvalde with one solitary glider away from the pack heading towards Garner Field. The Uvalde Hesperian chose the corner of Cottonwood Street and Garner Field Road to view and photograph the gliders arriving.

Watching the flight tracking map as the first plane seemed to get close to Garner Field on the map. The skies were clear and the sun positioned to the west did make it difficult at times to spot the plane. Finally I saw the first glider circle high overhead making one pass before attempting it landing. Looking to the North, that glider came in low and fast, almost completely silent.

After the first glider landed about 5:15PM, it would be another 30  minutes longer before the pack of gliders still west of Uvalde would be spotted in the sky. Once they started arriving they came in low and fast with many dumping their water ballasts just before making their final incoming approach and touchdown. Several times, I felt the drops of water fall on my head and face. Witnessing the water steaming off the fuselage of the glider and some trailing off the wings was a sight to see and makes for great pictures.

Another photographer named Miguel showed up and brought his  Canon digital camera and joined me as we took pictures of the gliders flying over and landing.

Although the August temperatures early Friday evening were brutal, getting to see the white sailplanes land was a real treat.

Todd Dorris informed me on Facebook that pilots would be resting on Saturday and taking to the skies one last time on Sunday, August 20th.

With many of the gliders competing over many miles around Uvalde, the only times one can really view the gliders from the ground is take offs and landings. Both events are an exciting sight to behold.

If you miss your chance this Sunday to see the gliders take off and land, there is always next year for the 2024 World Soaring Championship to look forward to.

Drive down Garner Field Road near Garner Field from about 10 AM until about 12:30 PM and you’ll likely spot a line of white planes on the runway waiting in line for tow planes to give them a lift in to the wild blue yonder for this week’s  for the 18 Meter Class Nationals and Super Regionals sponsored by the Soaring Society of America,

This week’s competition started Monday, August 14th  and will continue through Friday, August 25th, 2023.

The Uvalde Hesperian stopped by Garner Field,  Monday August 14th just past Noon at the far end of the Garner Field runway near the official tie-down area to take pictures of the gliders as they were taking off.

While there I met two men; one who traveled from Australia and the other from Finland. They were in the process of getting ready to tow a sailplane with a truck.

When asked when the gliders would be coming back for a landing, one said about 5 PM the gliders would start coming back to land at Garner Field.

This year’s competition is a prelude for the 38th 2024 FAI World Gliding Championship to be held in Uvalde in August of 2024.

The last time Uvalde hosted the World Gliding Championship was in 2012 and before that, in 1991.

Viewing Opportunities

Unlike other sports, there are limited opportunities and locations for spectators to watch the gliders as they compete. The best times to view the gliders are during take-offs and landings.  After the gliders take off about mid-day, much of the action happens way up in the sky. The gliders typically start returning about 5PM and sometimes they come in low and fast dumping any water onboard to lighten their load prior to touching down as they come in on the north side of the runway.

The Uvalde Hesperian has requested more information about this week’s event.
