The Rotary Club of Uvalde, a service club composed of a diverse group of volunteer minded business men and women and citizens in the community has recently embarked on a new service project: building a splash pad for families and children of Uvalde.

On Thursday, June 27th, the Rotary Club of Uvalde swore in Deborah “Debbie” McDonald as its incoming president for 2023 – 2024 at a special banquet held at the Uvalde Country Club.

According to McDonald, cost estimated for the proposed splashpad range from $250K to $550K. “The location has not been fully identified. The City must approve the location first, which will be at a park with utility infrastructure and restroom facilities,” McDonald said.

“The splash bucket, a large bucket that spills over when it gets full, is a very popular water toy that the children like. The anticipation of when the “spill” happens brings fun and excitement. Other toys and features spray nozzles, water guns, and a mushroom that rains from its edges are also being considered,” she said.

Once the splash pad is completed, the feature will be free for families and children to use and enjoy,

“I think this is a much needed project in Uvalde and because of the current situation and interest in promoting safe, fun, wholesome activities for our you, I am designating this as Splashpad One, because I think there could be Splashpad, 2, 3 and 4,” McDonald said.

The Rotary Clubs of Del Rio and Fredricksberg have built their own respective slash pads for the communities they serve.

                                                              Previous Projects

The Rotary Club of Uvalde built the Rotary Club Amphitheatre, as well as the arched entrance sign leading into Uvalde Memorial Park.

Bingo Fundraiser will start fundraising for the Splash Pad Project.

On Saturday, July 8th, the Rotary Club of Uvalde will be hosting its first official fundraiser for the splash pad project at the Ssgt. Willie de Leon Civic Center.

Bingo will start at 7 PM with the doors to open at 5:30 PM. Pre-sale tickets for the Bingo can be purchased at Galo Eye Center, Uvalde Chamber Office and Hillcrest Funeral Home.

We hope you will help us help them by raising these funds to get HOPE to Uvalde so these families can feel the Hope & Healing and peace she brings

Christa Eastman is on a mission to bring hope and healing to the grieving families and to the people of Uvalde. As a grieving mother herself, she is working to provide comfort to the people of Uvalde by bringing an Angel of Hope statue to the Uvalde City Cemetery through her fundraising efforts   “I’m a grieving mother myself. I have 18 angels in Heaven, 3 of which I have buried including my daughters twin brother. When I heard the awful event in Uvalde last year my daughter said to mom they need Hope in their city. We decided to see what we could do. I reached out to the mayor and immediately got a reply. They wanted to see Hope come and they had the perfect spot in the cemetery where most of the kids are laying to rest,” Eastman said.

“The Christmas Box Angel Of Hope was started in 1994 in Salt Lake City, Utah by Richard Paul Evans. It was inspired by his book “The Christmas Box”, in this book a woman is seen mourning her child at a headstone with an angel on it. Well families started asking Evans where they could find the angel. So he went to work and the first angel was dedicated in Salt Lake in 1994. Today there are over 160 angels around bringing HOPE to families and communities, including one for Newtown CT where they also endured the shooting of elementary kids. The whole world watched that fateful day and our hearts went out to Uvalde.
Silver Springs Cemetery Stow, Ohio
I also reached out to Shirley at Laguna Monument and they were immediately on board as well. We just felt we needed to help these families and the whole community there to have Hope & Healing. We’ve been visiting the Utah angels and have taken the photos of the Uvalde kids and teachers and took photos with them and the angel. We have also donated backpacks full of school supplies and hygiene kits in honor and in memory of the kids and teachers there in Uvalde to the Christmas Box House in Salt Lake,” she said.
” It will be a great monument for this community to help in their healing process. Once the money is raised the money will be given to the Christmas Box Angel Of Hope Foundation and the statue will be made and sent to Uvalde, TX and then we will have a dedication ceremony. The photo is of the Angel of Hope statue. We want to thank you all for helping bring Hope to this community that needs her. Thank you,: Eastman said.
According to Uvalde Main Street Manager Gloria Resma, the City has already put a concrete slab at the cemetery to place the angel.

Three year old Sage Sutherland diagnosed and receiving treatments autoimmune encephalitis

When one of its own is in need, the Uvalde Fire Department showed last Sunday, February 19th it and many other community members will not hesitate to come together and lend a helping hand.

The plate sale included BBQ half chicken, potato salad and beans along with a quilt raffle. The fundraiser was held Sunday afternoon at the Ssgt. Willie de Leon Civic Center’s parking lot.

Sage Sutherland, the three year old daughter of Macy and Heath Sutherland was diagnosed with autoimmune encephalitis. A GoFundMe account was created by Laura Downing,

“They have been there for one week, running more tests to decide best treatment. She has been diagnosed with autoimmune encephalitis, still researching cause, and treatments include steroids, IVIG, and plasmapheresis. All long term and very hard on a little three year old and her parents, who also have their six week old son staying close by with relatives. Prayers for this sweet family are much appreciated. They are away from home indefinitely (3-4 weeks, at least) and are in for weeks of treatments and then rehabilitation,” according to information posted on Sutherland’s GoFundMe site.

The Uvalde Volunteer Fire Department posted the following on its Facebook Page: “On behalf of the Sutherland family, we would like to thank the Uvalde High School NJROTC and all of the volunteers who helped with Sage’s fundraiser. They are very humbled and appreciative of your support.”
