On Thursday morning, February 19th, an untold number of voters filed complaints with the Texas Secretary of State about aggressive campaigning from candidates or their volunteers, according to Uvalde County Election Administrator Christina White. The parking lot west of the Civic Center is where many candidates have placed pop-up tents and candidates, and their volunteers hold campaign signs hoping to influence voters as they head to the polls. According to the City of Uvalde’s election ordinance, there are areas designated for candidates’ pop-up tents and areas for voters to park.

“Voters reported to the City of Uvalde and, I was told by the City complaints were made to the Secretary of States office. I am not aware of any reports to the Attorney General’s office at this time.  The city manager and the Civic center manager asked me to ask the Candidates and their electioneers to abide by the City Ordinance regarding electioneering at the Civic Center. The City of Uvalde website has the rules that the candidates must abide by. I had shared this information with the Party Chairs and all candidates were aware of the rules.  The city will remove any signs, chairs, pop tents that are in violation of the ordinance,” Uvalde County Elections Administrator Christine White said in a press statement sent to the Uvalde Hesperian.

“I asked the candidates to review the rules and move out of the voters parking area. They all complied,” She said.

The Uvalde Hesperian reached out to Uvalde County Party Chair Carlos Lopez for a comment.

He said, “We’re all on the same page now.”

Election Administrator Christine White presented a slate recommended elections judges and alternates for Uvalde County Commissioners Court as an agenda item that Commissioners ultimately approved.

Prior to early voting beginning on Monday, October 20th, the Uvalde Hesperian spoke to White over the telephone asking who the election judge for this year’s November 4th election would be. White stated she would be the elections judge.

Before the vote on the slate of election judges, U.C. Commissioner Ronnie Garza told the court he had received some blowback from constituents about one of the nominated election judges: Jolene Williams. Following the meeting the Uvalde Hesperian spoke with Garza who stated he had received emails and phone calls regarding Williams’ nomination as an election judge.

Two individuals, J. Anson Bills and Diana Olvedo-Karau both spoke against William’s nomination as an election judge citing close familial connections to relatives who are actively campaigning for the creation of the new Emergency Services District 3 on the November 4th ballot.

Election Administrator White stated at the meeting that she contacted the Texas Secretary of State’s legal time and the Texas Ethics Commission about suspected conflicts of interest regarding Williams serving as an election judge with concerns over a possible conflict of interest. White said she was told by the Texas Secretary of State’s Office there was not an issue.

White also stated she consulted the Uvalde County Republican Party Chair. When asked if she had contacted the Democratic Party Chair, she stated she sent an email but did not get a response back.

Commissioner John Yeackle stated he has had some differences with Williams in the past.

“I don’t think anybody can question her [Williams] integrity over the years operating in that capacity,” Yeackle said.

Letter to the Editor submitted by James Tweed Ocean City, NJ 08226

03-08-25

Oh Kumbaya!  There is common ground for those who voted for, or
against, Donald Trump to be President of the United States again.

First, we can all agree that he won the election.  Second, Kamala
Harris did not whine and lie to the American people that she really
won.  And third, since it was a free democratic election, the American
people will get the government they deserve.

For those citizens who feel disappointed that a majority of voters
chose as their leader a demagogue who believes the rule of law does
not apply to him, your duty now is to bear witness to the
consequences.  And remember.  For history’s sake.

Stay awake as the herd nods off, and avoids evidence of an
insurrection that happened before their very eyes.  Observe the idiot
wind that blows constantly from the mouths of all those Trump-pets
pretending that traitors are patriots.  Don’t fall for the false
equivalencies, like convincing you that their retribution is the same
as real justice.

And stop thinking about King Rump.  Entertainment is his game.  He’s
the best at keeping everyone distracted while he performs his con.  He
knows what he’s doing.   Also, don’t waste your time trying to
convince your friends and relatives who have slid down the rabbit hole
of self-delusion.

This election proved Mark Twain was right when he
observed: “It is easier to fool a man, than to convince him he has
been fooled.” James Tweed

The Uvalde County Commissioners Court met today at 11 AM to canvas the 2024 November election canvass report.

Uvalde County Elections Administrator Melissa Jones spoke before the court said, “We had a really good turnout. We had 9838 voters who came out to vote.

When Jones was asked by Uvalde County Judge Bill Mitchell what percentage of the voters came out, Jones said it was about 54% to 55% of the votes.

According to Jones, the Early Voting Ballot Board had already met and only 4 of the 173 provisional ballots were accepted. The majority of the provisional ballots that were rejected was because those voters were not registered to vote or the voters were just passing through.

Jones also reported that during the November election, the Elections Office utilized 10 election boxes down from 14 boxes previously used. While the voting locations outside of the City of Uvalde stayed the same day, some polling locations changed inside the City.

Jones said that the Civic Center was the largest turnout location. “1082 people showed up to the Civic Center,” she said.

When asked by Commissioner Ronnie Garza how Jones notified the voters of the news polling place locations, she said, “We put it in the newspaper, we put it on our Facebook page. We notified the candidates as well.”

Judge Mitchell said, “Moving forward perhaps we should come up with a strategy of promoting those sites, those polling sites.” is needed to promote the new polling locations.

Jones continued by saying the Uvalde County Elections Office did try to place ads on Facebook but were unable to get approval from Facebook to run ads.

With most of the local Uvalde County races having been decided during the Republican Primary Elections earlier this year in March, there were a handful of races that were decided Tuesday, November 6th on Election Night.

During the November 54th General Elections, former Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin Jr. (R-TX) faced off against Cecilia Castellano (D-TX) vying for a seat currently held by Uvaldean Tracy O. King (D-TX).  McLaughlin Jr. was joined by over 100 supporters at an invitation only election watch party at Broadway 830 on Election Night.

As the statewide votes came in on Election Night, it became clear early on that McLaughlin secured about 60% votes to secure a sound lead over his opponent Castellano. Source: Texas Secretary of State

Registered voters are turning out in brisk numbers to Uvalde County polling locations to cast their respective votes for President of the United States as well as other federal, state and national races in addition to the County Emergency Services District ballot initiative which, if approved, would establish a new taxing entity to fund City of Uvalde and areas of Uvalde County volunteer fire departments.

Knippa ISD School Board elections:

Voters residing within the Knippa School District are casting votes for two trustee positions on the Knippa ISD School Board. The KISD school board elections are included with the overall Uvalde County Elections.

Uvalde County Elections Administration Melissia Jones stated that almost 1500 voters have cast their votes as of about 2:15PM today at the SSgt. Willie de Leon Civic Center and the other Uvalde County’s polling locations.

“The Civic Center is busy.” Jones said.

Jones also said while she since early this morning the voter turnout has been steady. Jones also said that, in the City of Uvalde,  voters can also vote at the Uvalde County Nutrition Center, the Herby Ham Activity Center and at the Dry Frio Room of the Uvalde County Fairplex.

Uvalde CISD Voter Approved Tax Rate election:

Voting is also taking place at the Uvalde CISD Central Offices and at Batesville School where voters will be deciding on the District’s Voter Approved Tax Rate or VATRE.

According to Uvalde CISD Election Administrator Roxanne Hill, the voter turnout today at Uvalde CISD Central Office has been “extremely busy.”

“During the week, the most we’ve had was 120 voters in a day. We hit that number at 2 PM today,” Hill said.

If passed, the 11-cent property tax would bring in close to $2 million dollars to shore up the current budget deficit. According to Superintendent Ashley Chohlis, the effective tax increase would only impact homeowners by 1 cent increase in property taxes as a 10-cent property tax decrease will take effect due to a bond passed in 2005 will be paid off by the district.

After requests presented by Ssgt. Wille de Leon Civic Center Manager Gloria Resma to limit or eliminate all political signage, the Council voted to limit candidates to two 24 inch X 18 inch signs and one larger 4 foot X 8 foot sign on Civic Center Property.

As part of the approved motion, the larger 4 Ft. X 8 Ft. signs must be either secured by wooden stakes or mounted on a sled. Metal t-posts are prohibited.

Resma also asked that parking in front of the Civic Center be limited to only Civic Center staff but it did not appear the City Council took action on that request.

I will continue leading from a foundation built on honesty and integrety. Thank you all for making this possible. I look forward to serving the citizens of Uvalde County for another 4 years.”
