The Uvalde County Commissioners Court met today at 11 AM to canvas the 2024 November election canvass report.

Uvalde County Elections Administrator Melissa Jones spoke before the court said, “We had a really good turnout. We had 9838 voters who came out to vote.

When Jones was asked by Uvalde County Judge Bill Mitchell what percentage of the voters came out, Jones said it was about 54% to 55% of the votes.

According to Jones, the Early Voting Ballot Board had already met and only 4 of the 173 provisional ballots were accepted. The majority of the provisional ballots that were rejected was because those voters were not registered to vote or the voters were just passing through.

Jones also reported that during the November election, the Elections Office utilized 10 election boxes down from 14 boxes previously used. While the voting locations outside of the City of Uvalde stayed the same day, some polling locations changed inside the City.

Jones said that the Civic Center was the largest turnout location. “1082 people showed up to the Civic Center,” she said.

When asked by Commissioner Ronnie Garza how Jones notified the voters of the news polling place locations, she said, “We put it in the newspaper, we put it on our Facebook page. We notified the candidates as well.”

Judge Mitchell said, “Moving forward perhaps we should come up with a strategy of promoting those sites, those polling sites.” is needed to promote the new polling locations.

Jones continued by saying the Uvalde County Elections Office did try to place ads on Facebook but were unable to get approval from Facebook to run ads.

The Uvalde Coyotes were able to pull ahead of the Eagle Pass CC Winn Mavericks after the first quarter touchdown duel resulting in a win for the Coyote varsity team Friday night at the Honey Bowl Stadium.

The Coyotes defense was able to prevent the Mavericks from driving to the end zone forcing the Mav’s to punt at fourth down several times.

The Coyotes were also able to snag the Mav’s on a couple of occasions. While there were a few break away plays by both teams, the Coyotes were able to dive the ball to the end zone despite the numerous injuries on the field. It is unclear how these player injuries could affect the Coyotes in next week’s game.

Two back to back 15-yard penalties by the Mav’s helped drive the Coyotes closer to the end zone. By the fourth quarter it became clear the Eagle Pass team would not be able to make up the points it needed to beat the Coyotes.

The Uvalde Coyotes ended their second game of the season tonight with another win. this time against the Crystal City Javelinas. The Javelinas were able to put one touchdown on the board during the first half.

Fans packed the Honey Bowl and the atmosphere was brimming with excitement.

The Uvalde Hesperian made it to the game during halftime, and caught the second half of the game. Both teams had strong defensive lines. However, the Coyote offensive line was stronger and was able to gain yardage by running the ball for a good part of the game. The quarterback for the Javelinas did attempt several passes but most were incomplete. During the third quarter, the Coyotes were able to intercept a Javelina pass and claim the ball.

A timeout was called for an injury of one of the Uvalde players in the third quarter and for much of the second half, Coyotes played conservatively by running the ball and grinding out yardage while the Coyote defensive line kept the Javelina’s offensive line from gaining the yards needed for first downs.  Near the end of the fourth quarter with less than 5 minutes left on the clock. .the Coyotes did try to pass the ball but the play was incomplete.

The final score of the game was Coyotes: 21, Javelinas: 7
