At Monday night’s June 3rd school board meeting, Superintendent Ashley Chohlis breaks the news a County Road 107 is actually in the East Zone not the West Zone

This past week, the newsmakers were Uvalde CISD and El Progreso Memorial Library.

The Uvalde CISD school board met on Monday, June 3rd for its first of three June meetings where the board is in the process of reviewing applicants for the vacant East Zone seat.  At the meeting, Superintendent Ashley Chohlis announced that the district had learned from the County its district map was in error and that County Road 109 was incorrectly included in the West Zone and it actually belongs in the East Zone.

The Library’s annual summer reading program started its second week of activities and on Friday evening, Mendell Morgan’s reception was attended by numerous friends and community members. Morgan was this year’s recipient of the Texas Library Association’s Librarian of the Year.

At the reception, an announcement was made that the library is planning on a new building project to expand the facilities. A capital fundraising campaign will be officially announced soon.

Crowds of summer river goers were evident in Concan this past week at the Frio River Crossings with numerous sightings of trucks loaded with tubes were seen on River Road. ATV’s and golf carts were also observed driving on River Road CR 348 between resorts and crossings although this is illegal.

The Texas Hill Country River Region Visitor’s Center started its weekly children’s rock painting (Thursday) and public stargazing (Fridays).  Both are free events held at the Uvalde County Visitor Center.

The Frio River at Seven Bluff Crossing in Concan was a party scene early this evening with many observed floating in the river on the upper level and chilling out.

The water level at Seven Bluff Crossing and Mager’s Crossing was good for kayaking,  general floating and partying but tubers will likely have to walk in shallow stretches of the river between crossings.

Frio River enthusiasts and summer vacationers have returned to Concan and Frio River and the traffic on River Road (CR 248) has increased compared with last weekend.

Uvalde County Sheriff’s patrols have been noticed along River Road as well.  The lack of significant spring rainfall has resulted in low water levels in the Frio River but there were numerous people seen at the Concan Swimming Hole as well as Seven Bluff Crossing areas of the river area where there is still some water for people to splash and float around in.

“Summer is officially upon us. Concan had a record breaking Memorial Day opener for calls in one day. 11 calls in 24 hours for us. We utilized all of our trucks and UTV yesterday. More so our new ambulance was on the road the entire day. It’s going to be a long and very hot summer so we urge everyone to stay hydrated,” Concan Volunteer Fire Department Chief Justin Willis said.

Joel Ramirez with San Antonio AirLife said, “It is starting up and it has been the same number of calls you would expect for summer, so no significant motorcycle or car wrecks and it would be great to get through the summer without one.”

The Uvalde Hesperian was up in Concan on Saturday afternoon and an ambulance was seen heading up Mountain Valley Road responding to an emergency call there.

Matt Keyser from Michigan, originally from Floresville, Texas met up with 12 of his high school friends in Concan this past weekend for their annual Fantasy Football meet-up that has been getting together in August for the past 29 years to select players for their annual Fantasy Football weekend. According to Keyser, this year’s gathering was the first time they met up in Concan.

In addition to renting a house and drafting Fantasy Football players, the group also met up to play a round of golf at Frio Valley Ranch Golf Course on Friday and Saturday, August 25th and 26th.

Sometime that afternoon, word quickly spread to the Frio Valley Ranch staff that a golfer made a hole in one Hole 5 which is a 3-par hole.

When Keyser’s ball was seen landing in the hole from the white tee-box, 154 yards from the flag, he said, “I think everyone on the golf course heard us because we were so loud. (There was) Definitely excitement and lots of high-fives as we had multiple groups out there.

When asked what club or iron he used for the drive, he said he used a 9 iron. As for as the type of golf bal he used, he said, ” I only use Bridgestone.”

He went on to say, “Also, when someone hits the hole in one they have to buy drinks in the clubhouse All my friends met there after the golf round and we had a few rounds of drinks totaling a large bar tab. Best money ever spent.”
