With the Frio River flowing at a high rate and the water mixed with debris, river-goers mostly stayed along the shoreline of the Frio River on Saturday July 5th in the Concan Area. The spectacle of the flooded river drew many to come to take pictures of the event.

A rise in the Frio River was monitored Friday Evening, July 4th with the turbulent waters reaching the Kenneth Authur Crossing at about 7:44 PM according to a new text alert system developed by the Texas Hill Country River Region.

Concan Fire and Rescue tested a flood alarm on Friday, Afternoon July 4th which has not been used in a long time along with early notification of flood waters according to Concan Fire and Rescue Chief Justin Willis. “From what everyone said, it was heard throughout the canyon,” he said.

On Sunday, July 6th. Concan Fire and EMS issued the following statement warning river goers to be vigilant of changing river conditions:

“We are aware of rain falling up on the prongs of the Frio River. With the ground already saturated, it won’t take much for the river to rise again—and it can happen fast. We will continue to monitor and update as we hear or see changes!

Please stay alert, if you’re in the water be aware of your surroundings and monitor conditions closely. Swift changes in the river can create dangerous situations with little warning.

As always, we are standing by and ready to respond if needed. Stay safe and stay aware!”

Frio River enthusiasts and summer vacationers have returned to Concan and Frio River and the traffic on River Road (CR 248) has increased compared with last weekend.

Uvalde County Sheriff’s patrols have been noticed along River Road as well.  The lack of significant spring rainfall has resulted in low water levels in the Frio River but there were numerous people seen at the Concan Swimming Hole as well as Seven Bluff Crossing areas of the river area where there is still some water for people to splash and float around in.

“Summer is officially upon us. Concan had a record breaking Memorial Day opener for calls in one day. 11 calls in 24 hours for us. We utilized all of our trucks and UTV yesterday. More so our new ambulance was on the road the entire day. It’s going to be a long and very hot summer so we urge everyone to stay hydrated,” Concan Volunteer Fire Department Chief Justin Willis said.

Joel Ramirez with San Antonio AirLife said, “It is starting up and it has been the same number of calls you would expect for summer, so no significant motorcycle or car wrecks and it would be great to get through the summer without one.”

The Uvalde Hesperian was up in Concan on Saturday afternoon and an ambulance was seen heading up Mountain Valley Road responding to an emergency call there.

Dry conditions likely contributed to the spead of the fire

by Michael Robinson | Uvalde Hesperian; Picture by Robinson

At approximately 5:45 PM, Knippa Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire on the westbound side of Highway 90 about a mile to a mile and a half east of Knippa.

The Uvalde Hesperian learned that the fire may have started on the bar ditch near the railroad tracks and spread into a nearby cornfield. Just before 8 PM this evening fire crew was observed near the tracks hosing down a burnt area as an eastbound freight train passed by. It is not known at this time how the fire started or how much property was burned.

The Concan Volunteer Fire Department may have also sent a truck and personnel to assist with the fire as a Concan VFD truck was seen heading towards Knippa.

“Our calls in Concan, typically quadruple from Memorial Day to Labor Day…”

With thousands of summer tourists traveling to float the Frio River at Concan, Garner State Park and Texas Hill Country River Region in Uvalde County, between Memorial Day and Labor Day, emergency responders traditionally see a dramatic increase in emergency response calls.

“Our calls in Concan, typically quadruple from Memorial Day to Labor Day due to the distance to Uvalde and also the distance to a trauma center, a lot of people are flown. It also depends on if they meet the requirements per STRAC.” said Fire Chief Justin Wills of the Concan Volunteer Fire Department. “We’ve had 72 calls since Memorial Day: Memorial Day weekend 6, June was 44 and July so far is 23,” he said.

Joel Ramerez, a flight paramedic with San Antonio AirLife based in Uvalde said so far this summer, they have flown to Concan about 6 times.

Volunteer Fire Department to get a new ambulance

“Compared to Uvalde EMS it’s not very many calls but considering there’s only 200 permanent residents in Concan, that’s a lot for us.” Wills said. “We have actually been working on obtaining our own ambulance in Concan and it should be here sometime next month or September. We will be the first fire department based EMS in Uvalde County. When the ambulance comes in and is ready to go we will have an open house,” Wills said.

Concan Fire and Rescue Facebook Post

Concan Fire and Rescue now has additional fire trucks to add to its fleet. The following was posted Sunday, Afternoon on the organization’s Facebook Page:    On behalf of Concan Volunteer Fire Department, we are immensely thankful for the PAFD- Port Aransas Fire Department for their generous donation of Engine 2. Their support is invaluable to our mission, and we could not be more appreciative. The engine will enable us to improve our fire protection capabilities and ensure that we can provide a prompt, safe, and efficient service to everyone in the Concan Community. We deeply value your kindness and sincerely thank you for it.

Our sincere thanks go out to Texas A&M Forest Service and Tim Kendrick for his invaluable assistance with this mission as well.

#firedepartmentsupportingVFD #helpinghandsprogram

“The 2002 KME fire truck might not be brand new but it’s new to us. The Engine will replace our 1986 Spartan Engine and serve as our primary responding unit. The Fire Engine has a 1250 gallons a minute pump carrying 1000 gallons of water. This new truck will also carry our brand new electronic extrication tools that were donated as well to better assist us in extracting patients from vehicles,” Concan Fire Chief Justin Willis said.

“We were contacted back in August by the Texas Forest Service regarding this Fire Truck up for donation. Due to the Concan area growing at the rate it is, we knew we needed to upgrade. The Donation went to a program called helping hands where it was then given to us,” he said.
