UVALDE, TX – Millions of Americans’ lives are impacted daily by mental health conditions. Mental illness does not discriminate by age, race, religion, or socio-economic status. It affects many people in communities across the globe, and communities must work together to create well-being and resilience and educate people regarding mental illness. An educated community is a healthy community.

Well-being and resilience are essential in preventing the onset of mental health problems and potentially lessening the severity of existing mental health problems. Well-being and resilience are vital to developing efficient problem-solving skills, building and maintaining interpersonal relationships, and realistic goal setting, greatly enhancing an individual’s ability to perform and contribute meaningfully in daily life. Resilience, which is directly related to well-being, is about coping with and adapting to new situations. Having a sense of resilience and positive well-being enables a person to approach others and situations with confidence and optimism, which is especially important for people, given the enormous changes that occur after traumatic events.

To create well-being and resiliency and to educate the community on the importance of mental health issues, Uvalde Memorial Hospital’s Crossroads Behavioral Health program is hosting The event will bring together mental health professionals, caregivers, parents, friends, and community members affected by mental or behavioral health. This is an opportunity to explore the truth, discuss the reality, and move towards a healthier future as a community.

The event will feature keynote speaker Mindy Corporon, Co-founder of Workplace Healing LLC and innovator of the Human Recovery Plan Software Platform. Mindy was the CEO of a successful wealth management firm when tragedy struck. Her father and oldest son were murdered by a white supremacist intent on killing Jews. Her life purpose changed from guiding people financially to creating space for them to learn how to cope with grief and trauma to find joy again. Mindy’s search for healing and resiliency has allowed her to emerge as a passionate advocate dedicated to advancing mental health awareness. She is the author of “Healing a Shattered Soul” and presents at conferences worldwide.

The event will also feature breakout sessions on trauma in children and teens, understanding anger, faith-based healing, and building mental wellness in adolescents. Professionals in each field will present on the topics and allow additional time for questions and answers in each session.

For more information on Healthy Minds Matter, contact Susan Rios at (830) 278- 6251 extension 1037.

For more information on local mental health services, contact Crossroads Behavioral Health at (830) 278- 8144. An initial assessment is free, and all treatment is strictly confidential.

We will explore letting go, the benefits of grief, healing of your heart, and how to thrive in the seasons of loss. The course will also help friends and family of someone grieving better understand their loved ones. Grief and change are great teachers that can provide us much understanding about ourselves.

The book titled “How to Plan a House” was checked out in 1968 when the El Progreso Memorial Library was located on the second floor of the old Garner Home at 333 North Park Street. Back then, the library used a physical library card and date stamp register placed just inside of the front cover of the book.

“Since the book had long been declared, missing in action, and considered lost so long it was removed from the system and a fine could not, therefore, be calculated. If it were still in the system the fine would have been just over $4,000! He graciously gave us a check for $100 and several nice, new books which we have cataloged and placed in the collection. He also plans to donate additional new books since the one he checked out so long ago on planning a house was published in 1945 and has been out of date for decades,” Library Director Mendell Morgan said.

Morgan explained that library fines do not accumulate beyond the replacement price of a lost or overdue book plus a processing fee.

As for the future of the book, Morgan said the book will be placed on a cabinet of curiosities in the library director’s office for safekeeping.

“We are happy to have the book back and appreciate his honesty,” Morgan said.

Oberlender introduced himself as a retired Natalia substitute teacher, a retired security consultant and educational consultant with the U.S. Army. He also said he is a member of the Medina Republican Party and an educational liaison for school boards in Medina County.

Prior to speaking, Oberlender handed JJ Suarez handouts to be distributed to the other board members which contain two lists. The handout contains two lists. According to Oberlender, the first list contains the book title that he found in the Uvalde School libraries. The second list is a list created by the Make School Safe Again Project , MSSA, based out of Fredericksburg.

“We are finding books that are pornographic, basically pornographic in the school libraries across the state. It’s not just your problem. We don’t think those books and others such as promotion of transgenderism, homosexuality, Black Lives Matter, and Critical Race Theory should be in the school libraries or our school curriculums. They are still in the school curriculums by the way. I know what publishers put in the lesson plans your school’s buy. I’ve taught them.

“The MSSA project provides a tool for parents and anyone else to go into the libraries on the internet and see what’s in the libraries: the school libraries,” he said.

All of us are worried about value sets. Everything our children learn in the schools, at home creates a person, an individual, a character.

“We believe that children need to be taught a core curriculum of reading, writing, mathematics, history, science, not Critical Race Theory, not Black Lives Matter, Not promotion of Transgenderism. “

At the MSSA website, the following link is provided to search for books at a school library.

Go to GoFollett.com and search your public school libraries.
