North East Street between the Uvalde County Courthouse and the Uvalde Leader-News offices was blocked off from through traffic as close to 100 people turned out to see the local election results from respective precincts from Uvalde County trickled in as the evening progressed.

Republican Candidate Don McLaughlin for Texas State House District 80 held a private party for his supporters at the Broadway 830 restaurant while Republican Candidate Roy Kothmann had rented a venue space for a private party where his supporters gathered.

The Uvalde County Elections office released the unofficial election results from all the county precincts shortly about 8:30 PM.

The results showed that while incumbent candidate for Sheriff Rubin Nolasco received the most votes in the Republican Uvalde County Primary Race, his votes weren’t enough to stave off a run-off election between him and challenger Otto Arnim. Nolasco was not seen among the many candidates and citizens gathered downtown.

Also missing from the assembly were Robb School victims family members, some of whom had been voiced criticism against Nolasco and some of the other constable candidates who were on scene during the May 24th, 2022 tragedy at Robb School

Attorney Charles Downing defeated incumbent Rhonda Vigil for the Uvalde County Republican Chair seat.

With few exceptions, Uvalde voters voted for the incumbent candidates in many races.

Republican Incombant Candidate John Dodson (third from left) watches the election tally board for precinct results to be posted.

Should only one local media outlet be provided exclusive access to unofficial election result totals on Election Night?

by Michael Robinson | Uvalde Hesperian

Top picture was taken in October during the 2023 early voting period outside of the Ssgt. Wille de Leon Civic Center.

On February  9th, 2024, the Uvalde Hesperian sent an email to Uvalde County Elections Administrator Melissa Jones requesting equal access to the Uvalde County Election returns once the unofficial totals are available. As of March 1st, the Uvalde Hesperian has not received a response from Jones.

“Ms. Jones ,

Good morning.

As the early voting. For the March primaries are fast approaching, and the election will be here soon I hereby request that the Uvalde County  Election vote totals be made available to me DBA the Uvalde Hesperian as early as the they become available.

I am aware that your office provides these results to the Uvalde Leader-News on the evening of each respective Election Day.

I hereby request the same courtesy be extended to me and the Uvalde Hesperian.

I also request a response to this email acknowledging receipt of this email and if your office will comply with my request for election results.

If for some reasons, this request cannot be honored please let me know including the reason it cannot be facilitated. Thank you.”

On February 16, 2024, the Uvalde Hesperian mailed a certified letter to the Uvalde County Elections Office with the same request and asking for a response.

The Uvalde Hesperian is currently waiting for a response to its request for the Uvalde County Elections unofficial results for the upcoming Tuesday, March 5th Democratic and Republican vote totals at the same time as other local media provided this information.

As of 9:30 AM, 27 voters came to vote at the Ssgt. Willie de Leon Civic Center to cast their respective ballots in either the Democratic or Republican Primary elections. As of 11:30 AM, the number of voters was recorded at 115.

The front lawn in front of the Civic Center was filled with political signs and some volunteers were seen holding candidates’ signs on the sidewalk parallel to East Main Street in front of the Civic Center.

Several candidates had pop-up tents and tables in the western parking lot where they and family members and supporters waited to talk to any interested voters.

Voters have to choose between voting  in the Republican Primary or Democratic Primary but not both.  Many local races including the Uvalde County Sheriffs Race, Uvalde County Constable Races, County Commissioners Races  and the County Attorney race are all on the Republican Primary Ballot only as no Democratic candidates are running.

Voters who traditionally vote Democratic may be surprised to find their ballots do not have many local races on them. By the time the General Election rolls around in November 2024 , many if not all of these races will have been decided during the Primary elections.
