Today is final day for homeless campers to move out from Leona River area near city park

On March 26th the Uvalde Police Department issued a Notice to Vacate on its Facebook Page and posted these notices around Uvalde and near the area of one homeless encampment along the Leona River just south of Uvalde Memorial Park.

Earlier this morning about 9 AM, the Uvalde Hesperian went to the area near the park where several homeless tents and campsites have been set up. One camper was seen already packing up and getting ready to break camp while other camps are still set up with no visible sign the campsites are being taken down. Upon leaving the area a Uvalde Police Department unit was seen sitting in the parking lot on the far southern end of Uvalde Memorial Park nearest to the homeless encampments.

It is unclear when the City and the City Police Department plans on taking action to remove the camps from the Leona River bed area but action could be taken on Saturday, April 6th, 2024.

One camp at the southernmost end of the campground has a sizable campground footprint with numerous pallets and tarp covering.

Last week when the notice was issued, the Uvalde Hesperian noticed several Uvalde Police Department officers going down to the campsites informing the homeless campers of the City’s Notice to Vacate. An officer whose name was not recorded told the Uvalde Hesperian that the Police Department had already gotten campgrounds under nearby bridges removed.
