After approximately 2 1/2 hours meeting in a closed-door executive session on Wednesday June 4th, Uvalde CISD Trustees voted to allow the Uvalde CISD attorney to prepare pleading to be filed in the United States District Court concerning prior litigation Mireles vs Uvalde CISD in an effort to correct the District’s Trustee election 4-year election term.
The decision approved unanimously was an effort to realign the district to the 3-year terms decreed in 1982 concerning DOJ Mireles vs. UCISD Civil Action DR-77-CA-20 Consent Decree Compliance.
Trustee JJ Suarez made the motion to allow the district’s legal counsel to prepare a pleading inclusion a proposed resolution to be filed in the US District Court for the Western District of Texas the United Sates District Court to allow Uvalde CISD to return its election system to align more closely with the 1982 Consent Decree.
Following the vote, several board members spoke indicating the board wants to uphold the decree and do the right thing,
Trustee Javier Flores referred to 2007 when the school board elections fell out of alignment from the 1982 consent decree. He stated he was elected to the school board in 2010.
“We asked for a bunch of documents. The one thing that stood out,” Rizo said,
He referred to the 2007 deviation from the Consent Decree, he stated there is zero evidence that there was malice in the decision that led to the deviation.
Leading up to the vote, several citizens spoke during public comments including LULAC Attorney Gloria Leal.
