On Wednesday, April 2nd, about 50 people attended a Town Hall meeting held at the Ssgt, Willie De Leon Civic Center in the Cactus Room. A few city officials also joined Santos for the meeting designed not only provide citizens an opportunity to address the needs of the community but also allow for Santos and Assistant City Manager Joe Cardenas an opportunity to hold a discussion with citizens and provide context to the issues that City is working to address,
J. Anson Bills cited the City’s municipal pool which he claims is not in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act regarding the pool lift not being in operation for about 2 years according to Jennifer Gilliland.
Street lighting and city streets in need of repair were topics discussed at the meeting. Santos stated that because the City did not enact a plan for maintaining streets years ago, the City is faced with street repairs needed today.
While the meeting started on a tense note the meeting did have its humorous moments especially when Santos asked former Uvalde Mayor George Garza if he was aware the City Code Enforcement manager was seated two seats away from him on the same row referring to the code enforcement being criticized.
Garza said, ” I don’t forget. The problem is, I can’t remember.”
Assistant City Manager Joe Cardenas brought up the fact that TXDOT would be starting on its sidewalk construction soon and with that, the city would be looking at replacing water lines with both improvements benefitting some West Uvalde Streets.
