Location of Road County Road 109 in a different zone could affect eligibilty of one elected board member to serve
Superintendent Ashley Chohlis announced at Monday night’s June 3rd Board meeting stating the Uvalde County Clerk informed the District that County Road 109 was located in the East Zone and not the West Zone.
Trustees are elected to represent either the East Zone, West Zone or are elected as an At Large representative.
The discussion of the matter at Monday night’s school board meeting was brief and left some, including the Uvalde Hesperian with questions how this discrepancy could affect the Uvalde CISD school Board.
After the meeting, the Uvalde Hesperian learned that Trustee Laura Perez resides on CR 109 and was elected to serve the West Zone.
The Uvalde Hesperian reached out to District Officials via email asking for clarification of the situation and how it could affect the school board.
The Hesperian asked the following in it’s email to the District:
“Is there a sitting board trustee that resides on that road meaning that that trustee is living outside the zone he/she was elected to serve?
If so, does that disqualify that trustee from the position? Does that affect previous board votes and decisions?
Or is it significant concerning those applicants for the empty school board seat?”
Uvalde CISD Executive Director of Communications and Marketing Anne Marie Espinoza sent the following response to the Uvalde Hesperian:
“Thank you for your continued interest in our school board meetings and for bringing your questions to our attention. We have recently discovered that an error in the Zoning Map, which an outside agency generated, has resulted in a sitting board member being incorrectly identified as belonging to the wrong zone.
We understand this matter’s importance and will discuss it in more detail at the upcoming School Board Meeting on Monday, June 10th. It is important to note that this error is not the fault of the board member. Furthermore, neither the District nor the Board of Trustees have the authority to mandate that an Elected Official vacate their position.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we thoroughly research this situation to determine the best course of action.”
