Uvalde, TX, October 20, 2023 – Southwest Texas Junior College (SWTJC) is proud to announce its recognition as one of the Top 100 Universities for Hispanics by the Hispanic Outlook on Education Magazine. This esteemed recognition is part of the publication’s annual feature that tracks national advancements in Hispanic higher education and spotlights institutions dedicated to meeting the community’s educational needs.

As a designated Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and a member of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), SWTJC has consistently demonstrated its commitment to providing a comprehensive educational experience that caters to the unique needs of its Hispanic students.

SWTJC’s inclusion in this prestigious list results from our unwavering dedication to promoting diversity and excellence in education. The institution has been diligently working on its technical expansion plan for several months to broaden educational opportunities for our community. The plan outlines the following expansion projects:

  • Expansion of Professional Truck Driving to Uvalde Campus
  • Expansion of Diesel Technology to Uvalde Campus
  • Expansion of Automotive and HVAC to Eagle Pass Campus

In a continuous effort to enhance the educational opportunities SWTJC expanded its course catalog for the fall 2023 semester to include carpentry construction and cybersecurity specialist programs, catering to the evolving needs of students and the job market.

Furthermore, the institution is actively developing a surgical technician program, slated for launch in the 2024-2025 academic year. This addition aligns with SWTJC’s commitment to providing cutting-edge and career-oriented education.

As we look ahead, SWTJC is exploring the potential addition of two more promising programs for the Fall 2025 semester:

  • Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy: Meeting the growing demand for health care professionals.
  • Aviation Powerplant: Providing students with opportunities in the dynamic field of aviation.

These strategic initiatives exemplify SWTJC’s dedication to serving its diverse student body and the broader community while staying at the forefront of educational innovation.

Hispanic Outlook relies on data from the federal NCES Integrated Post-Secondary Education Data System (IPEDS) to compile its rankings, ensuring accuracy. This data is used to determine the institutions that serve the highest number of Hispanics/Latinos and the highest percentage of these as a proportion of total numbers.
