Candidate for City of Uvalde Mayor Kimberly “Kim” Rubio spoke about her vision as the Mayor of Uvalde at a Meet the Uvalde Mayoral Candidate Kim Rubio event held Thursday night, October 5th at 6 PM at the Tabernacle of Worship located at 3835 E. Main Street just east of town.  Roughly a dozen people attended the event which was hosted by K.A,R,M.A,  a local political action group.Kim said in her opening remarks that although she was born in Hondo she has lived all of of her life in Uvalde, She stated that here work at the Uvalde Leader-News as a staff writer covering school board meetings and later was assigned to cover City and County Governments where she learned a lot.

“I didn’t take running for mayor lightly. I’ve put a lot of thought into my decision.  It’s going to take a strong individual to bring this community together again, and I’m ready for the challenge,” Rubio said.

“We all lost something that day.  I lost my daughter. But this entire community lost a sense of security, and we all process that grief differently and individually. It’s going to take us all coming together. Our entire community.” she said.

“So regarding my campaign, I don’t want anybody to think I’m a one issue candidate. Yes, I’m calling for accountability and transparency. But I also have other issues I want to address. I want to work at boosting our economy working with small businesses , I want to maintain our roads and sidewalks, I want us to have a space, a safe travel space referring to the runners and walkers and people in wheelchairs she has seen.

“But more than anything I want to hear from Uvalde residents; what matters to them,” Rubio said.

An attendee asked how new businesses can be brought into town. Rubio answered by saying it takes effort. Businesses don’t just come to town. The City must actively go out and convince businesses to establish their businesses here.

Rubio said she feels it’s important for different socio-economic groups to work together on community projects. She stated the West Side Park, El Jardin de los Heroes is a beautiful park and more events could be held there.

She reflected on her experiences with Four Square Friday and how such events bring the community together.
