DEL RIO – THE TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY (DPS) is investigating a one-vehicle fatal crash that occurred on September 18, 2023, at approximately 3:42 p.m., on FM-117 approximately 0.4 miles south of mile marker 542 in Zavala County. Preliminary investigation revealed a 2001 Honda Shadow Motorcycle blue in color was traveling southbound on FM 117.
The Honda motorcycle struck a deer with its front end, where it became lodged under the front fender. Driver and motorcycle fell to his left side and continued to travel until it struck the southbound guardrail. Driver and passenger fell off the collision as a result of the crash.
Due to injuries sustained the driver and passenger of the Honda Motorcycle, Lance Wayne Smyth, 47 from Crystal City Texas was pronounced deceased on scene. Passenger Rhonda Parker Carson was pronounced deceased at the Uvalde Memorial Hospital 49 years old from Dilley Texas. DPS Troopers continue to investigate this fatal crash.
