Uvalde CISD: Report on the first day of school at Uvalde Elementary with photos

 Shortly after 7 AM on Monday, August 14th, Cars were lined out outside of Uvalde Elementary on West Mueller Street near the drop off point where students were seen meeting up with teachers and faculty dressed in purple shirts ready to greet them for the first day of school in the new grade.  

  The Uvalde Hesperian was invited on a tour to see what themorning of the first day of school was like for students, teachers and faculty members. One student was wearing a shirt that said, “Ready to Tackle Third Grade.”

   On the other opposite side of the campus on Bohme Street, school buses pulled up to let out students who rode the bus. Several bus drivers could be seen with big smiles as the folding doors opened to let out the children. 

  Inside, students were seen lined up inside of the cafeteria ready to pick up their breakfast trays which consisted of cereal, milk and fruit. 

   The long main hallway had colorfully decorated bulletin boards, and teachers standing outside the classroom doors waiting for their new students. 

   As classes go underway,students in one class opened up notes from each student’s respective parents. These notes were written by parents for their children during the Meet the Teacher Night held several days prior.

  Smiling students and teachers were seen everywhere. At 9 AM. A Pep Rally was held outside on the basketball court where Uvalde High School Cheerleaders could be seen cheering as UHS band drummers were keeping the beat going. Superintendent Gary Patterson welcomed the students who were seated followed by a surprise award ceremony for 3rd Grade Teacher Elina Ybarra at the pep rally. A representative from ESC-20 was on hand with Patterson to recognize Ybarra as the 2024 ESC-20 Elementary Teacher of the Year.
