Uvalde, TX, June 1, 2023 – Southwest Texas Junior College (SWTJC) is excited as four talented students from the Cosmetology program prepare to represent their institution at the prestigious SkillsUSA Nationals competition in Atlanta, GA. The event, set to take place from June 19 to 25, will showcase the skills and creativity of aspiring cosmetologists nationwide.

The SWTJC students, who triumphed in the SkillsUSA state competition held earlier this year, have proven formidable contenders. Roseanne Schwab, an exceptional cosmetology student, will showcase her expertise in various hair styling techniques. Beontae Puente will dazzle judges with his barbering skills, while Maresa Perez will exhibit her talent in esthetics. Lastly, Marissa Ramirez will demonstrate her versatility as a model.

At the state competition in April, SWTJC made quite a splash with outstanding performances in various categories. Maresa Perez clinched the gold medal in the esthetics category, showcasing her finesse in skin care treatments and makeup application. Kate Marshall, another gifted esthetician, secured the bronze medal, adding to the institution’s triumph.

Laurissa Rodriguez, a skilled nail care specialist, captured the bronze medal in the Nail Care category, impressing judges with her meticulous work and artistic flair.

The Barbering category witnessed SWTJC’s Luz Contreras and Beontae Puente shine brightly. Contreras walked away with the gold medal, exhibiting her exceptional skills in cutting, styling, and grooming men’s hair. Puente, displaying his mastery in barbering techniques, secured the silver medal, solidifying SWTJC’s prowess in this field.

In the highly competitive Cosmetology category, Roseanne Schwab proved herself to be a force to be reckoned with, clinching the gold medal. Her dedication, precision, and creativity set her apart from competitors, and she will undoubtedly make SWTJC proud on the national stage.

Not only did SWTJC excel in practical skills, but their knowledge was also tested in the Beauty Quiz Bowl. Team B, comprised of Kate Marshall, Dina Perez, Maresa Perez, Marissa Ramirez, and Rosanna Schwab, emerged victorious, winning the gold medal. Team C, consisting of Bianca Garza, Beontae Puente, Luz Contreras, and Laurissa Rodriguez, performed admirably and earned the bronze medal.

Dr. Hector Gonzales, the president of SWTJC, expressed his pride in the students’ accomplishments. “These students have exhibited exceptional talent and dedication, and they truly exemplify the excellence we strive for at SWTJC. We are confident they will make a strong impression at the SkillsUSA Nationals and continue to represent our institution with distinction.”
