Austin, Texas – This morning, State Senator Roland Gutierrez sent a letter to Gov. Abbott and Lt. Gov. Patrick demanding that the scope of the Special Legislative Session be expanded to address gun violence. Senator Gutierrez also authored SB 6 and SB 7, bills aimed at introducing commonsense gun safety solutions, urging that the bills be fast-tracked through the Texas Senate.
“The Uvalde families carried the memory of their lost children to the Capitol seeking solutions to end gun violence in Texas. They were ignored. To our collective shame, this Legislature failed to take any meaningful steps to impede the flow of dangerous weapons in this State. Texans are demanding that we do something. We must act now. There is no more important issue facing this Legislature than ending the gun violence epidemic in Texas,” State Senator Roland Gutierrez stated.
Senator Gutierrez is asking the Governor to expand the call of the Special Session to address the following:

Gutierrez concluded, “Lower property taxes do not ease the pain if your children or grandchildren are slaughtered, especially when gun violence is preventable. As we have seen, in Texas today, schools, churches, shopping malls, and even our homes are not safe from gun violence. The fact is seeking comprehensive gun safety legislation is vitally important to the safety, security, and survival of every Texan.”
