Uvalde CISD cancels school days for May 24th Robb School anniversary and upcoming solar eclipses

Administration recommending students not attend school after the 22nd day of May due to safety concerns as well as respect needed for May 24th

The Uvalde CISD school board voted to change to the end of year 2023 school calendar effectively cancelling school for students and staff for Monday, May 22nd through Thursday, May 25th, 2023 in consideration of the One-Year Anniversary of the Robb School Tragedy. Staff would return on the 26th for an end of the year work day and graduation.

“The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has been working with the district to make sure there are no financial consequences or make up for those days,” Interim District Superintendent Patterson said.

“We will submit a 3 day safety day waiver after the 25th. Unfortunately as we attempt to learn from incidents that have happened in the past at other school districts, we find there are some similarities. Social media chatter and threats seem to spike during these anniversary times. There will be campus issues at the Robb existing campus. We want to make sure that’s protected from vandals or graffiti or some people will own to take a part of the building or destroy something during this time: Patterson said. He went on to say there will be extra media and politicians arriving in town for the anniversary.

District votes  to cancel school on October 14th,2023 and April 8th,2024.  An annual eclipse will occur on October 14th, 2023 and a Total Solar Eclipse will be visible on April 8th, 2024.

Patterson stated a lot will be going on those two day as Uvalde will be a prime viewing site no that an additional 50,000 estimated to be visited our area.
