Local nursing home shuttles residents to polling places on Election Day
As the saying goes, there’s few things more American than baseball, hot dogs and apple pie. While there wasn’t any baseball game or apple pie nearby, the Uvalde Area Chamber of Commerce did offer free hot dogs to area voters.
Outside of the Uvalde Area Chamber of Commerce building on Election Day, November 8th, Chamber Director John Yeackle and staff fired up the Chamber of Commerce grill and cooked hot dogs for voters all day on Election Day.
A Chamber of Commerce Facebook post said, “Join us at the Uvalde Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center for a FREE HOT DOG when you VOTE!
Present your ‘I Voted’ sticker and we’ll get you taken care of.”
Amistad Nursing and Rehabilitation Center brought a van load of its residents to get in on the free food.
“It’s Election Day! We took our residents to vote today. And they even got treated to some delicious hotdogs from our Uvalde Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center by showing their “I Voted” stickers. They were happy and proud to have fulfilled their civic duty,” Amistad’s Facebook post read.
Amistad Nursing and Rehabilitation Administrator Cristina Arizmendi Mirelez said, “It was a long day for us. We went to three different precincts. We took the ones that wanted to go. We try to encourage the same type of life they had when they were at home. We want them to do everything they used to and then some.”
