Board of Trustees unanimously voted to name Gary Patterson as interim superintendent, placing an experienced leader to lead the district while conducting a superintendent search. The interim superintendency comes as superintendent Hal Harrell, Ed.D., begins transitioning to retirement.
Dr. Harrell announced his retirement on October 10 and will be reassigned to the position of Superintendent Emeritus as of November 1st to enjoy life, which has been patiently waiting for him. He will fulfill the duties of that position until his retirement, effective August 31, 2023. Dr. Harrell has 31 years of service to Uvalde C.I.S.D. His career in education began in 1976 as a teacher. In addition to East Central I.S.D., he reached the rank of superintendent at two other school districts, Valley Mills and Taylor. Patterson retired in 2014 and has served as interim superintendent at other school districts, such as Pflugerville, La Vernia, Falls City, and Lake Dallas.
“The board is grateful to have Mr. Patterson coming to assist us with his leadership during this transition period. His experience and skills will definitely be an asset to our district and our community. Mr. Patterson may only be here temporarily, but we know he is the right person for the support of our students and staff at this moment.” shared Luis Fernandez, president of Uvalde CISD Board of Trustees.
Mr. Patterson was one of two candidates interviewed for the interim superintendent position. He will join the district on November 1st, learning the operations from Superintendent Emeritus Hal Harrell, Ed.D.
