Uvalde CISD suspends entire campus police force on Friday calling in additional DPS officers to patrol its school campuses

After 10 days of round the clock protests outside of the Uvalde CISD Administration Offices, Brett and Nikki Cross got what they and others who supported them demanded: the suspension of two of the  district’s police officers from duty pending the results of an official investigation of their actions at Robb School on May 24th.
Brett Cross tweeted Friday following a statement released by the Uvalde CISD with the news the district had just suspended all of its campus police officers.
“Thank you all for supporting us. I try to read every message, every comment, every quote tweet. Even if I don’t get to “heart” it, I see them. Y’all’s support, and everybody locally is what made this sit out a success. They knew we wouldn’t back down and with the help of media everywhere we pushed and pushed. It was our first win. And it won’t be our last. From day one this has been about accountability and transparency. Our children deserve it. We deserve it. We will move forward into the next battle, as this war has no end in sight,” wrote Brett Cross in a message posted on Twitter.

On Thursday, the district fired a newly hired officer Crimson Elizondo whom it had learned was under investigation for her actions as one of the first DPS officers who arrived at Robb School within minutes of the start of the school shooting.

On Friday morning just before Noon , the school district issued the following statement:
“The District remains committed to resolving issues with verifiable evidence. Decisions concerning the UCISD police department have been pending the results of the Texas Police Chiefs Association and JPPI investigation. Recent developments have uncovered additional concerns with department operations.

As a result of the recent developments, Lt. Miguel Hernandez and Ken Mueller have been placed on administrative leave, and the District has made the decision to suspend all activities of the Uvalde CISD Police Department for a period of time. Officers currently employed will fill other roles in the district. Ken Mueller has elected to retire.

The District will continue to engage with the Texas Police Chiefs Association who is conducting a Management and Organizational Review. The results of this review will guide the rebuilding of the department and the hiring of a new Chief of Police. We expect to have a report later this month. Also, as previously stated, JPPI is conducting an investigation into the UCISD police officers’ response to the May 24, 2022 tragedy.  Results of the investigation will inform future personnel decisions.

The District has requested the Texas Department of Public Safety to provide additional troopers for campus and extra-curricular activities. We are confident that staff and student safety will not be compromised during this transition.

This is all the information we have at this time.  We will provide update(s) as information becomes available to us. “

At 9:3o that morning just before the statement was released, the Uvalde Hesperian interviewed Nikki Cross who along with her husband Brett Cross were sitting in front of the Uvalde CISD Administration Building on North Getty Street. Protest signs were placed in front of the administration building along with school backpacks representing the 19 children who perished during the May 24th Robb School Massacre.
