Wild Meeting : Angry families and community members blast school board for not acting sooner; applaud as School Board votes to fire Chief Arredondo
Exactly 3 months after the Robb Elementary School massacre that left 21 dead, the Uvalde CISD school board reconvenes after over an hour long closed door executive session and votes unanimously to fire school police chief Pete Arredondo.
Audience members and media alike entering the John Harrell Auditorium were required to pass through a TSA style screening process with metal detectors and trays where personal items were examined by law enforcement officials before being allowed to enter the auditorium.
Once the school board meeting started, fire speakers were given one minute each for public comments. The abbreviated time for public comments angered many including Brett Cross who called for transparency and demanded the school board meet out in the open for their discussions about their decision regarding Pete Arredondo.
After the school board members exited the main auditorium to convene into its closed-door executive session, family members and parents stepped up to the auditorium microphone, which was turned off and shouted that the microphone be turned on again. Shortly afterward, the mic was turned on and several Robb school 21 family members got up to talk about the children and family members that were murdered
While the school board continued for over an hour to meet behind closed doors,. there were a couple of occasions where individuals stepped up to the microphone to taunt the school board members asking them to come out from their private meeting.
For much of the meeting, there were angry shouts from the audience members towards the sitting school board members during the time of public comments.
In the end, the school board returned and ultimately voted unanimously to fire school police chief Pete Arrendondo. It was reported that Arredondo did not attend the proceedings that evening out of concern for his safety. The meeting adjourned abruptly.
