Uvalde CISD School Board signals changes; takes steps through storm of anger and protests

Robb Elementary Principal Mandy Gutierrez placed on administrative leave

The Uvalde CISD school board met one week after facing three hours of anger and calls for accountability at last week’s special community session.

Several community members addressed the school board at this meeting calling for change and accountability. A group of several dozen stormed out of the auditorium yelling, “No Justice,  No Peace” while   Deyanira Salazar spoke standing and addressing both the school board and the audience. “You’re not going to get very far in this world without an education.” Salazar said.  While she showed overall support for the school district, she was attempting to bring up an issue regarding school district curriculum director Michael Rodriguez. However as the crowd yelled and protested on their way out of the auditorium, Salazar ended her comments.

A school board member admitted when confronted by a community member, the school board and school as a whole failed to protect the students from the attack on May 24th.

It was stated by school board officials there would be additional meetings scheduled specifically for community members and the school board members to have a dialogue.

Superintendent Harrell and the board approved a new school calendar for the upcoming school year with school starting in September after Labor Day.

Superintendent Hal Harrell went though security plans and changes to be implemented before start of school. New Design Master security fencing to be installed in the coming few weeks. New cameras and security video system to be installed at campuses. Wi-Fi audits at all campuses. All campuses will have a designated single point of entry.
