College board appoints new member

Uvalde, TX, May 24, 2022 – SWTJC Board of Trustees appointed Rogelio M. Muñoz as a board member to replace the late Rodolfo Flores.

Muñoz is an alum of SWTJC and a graduate of the University of Texas and South Texas College of Law. He has been practicing law in Uvalde since 2005 and served on the Uvalde City Council from May 2010 until earlier this month after reaching his term limit.

Trustees voted unanimously to appoint Muñoz. During the meeting, Tracy King, Texas State Representative, was on hand to swear in Munoz, Dr. Harry Watkins, and Dr. Antonio Rivera.

Watkins and Rivera’s terms ended in May 2022, and they were up for reelection. Neither individual had an opponent.

After being sworn in, Muñoz asked to address the board, where he thanked the trustees for the opportunity to serve as a board member.

“I had the privilege of attending this college in 1998, in 1999. And much of the success that I’ve had in my life I attribute to this institution,” said Muñoz. “I look forward to working with you all and making this place a better place.”

According to SWTJC President Dr. Hector Gonzales, Mr. Munoz is filling the unexpired term left vacant after the passing of Mr. Flores but will be subject to a special election to be called in November.

During the meeting, the re-organization of the board of trustees took place. Board member Tony Moreno nominated Watkins to remain president, board member Elena Lara nominated Rivera as vice president, and board member Victor Lopez nominated Tony Moreno as secretary. All nominations received a unanimous vote.
